Celebrate The Unseen Wins
On my way to a conference in Boston, walking towards my terminal at BWI I realized that I had a coffee cup in one hand, while my other was pushing my suitcase. This is when I came to the sad realization that my arms were not swinging and my steps were not being recorded. I quickly made a mental calculation that I could not hold the coffee cup and push my suitcase with the right hand, to allow my left hand to swing and track those steps (I know, I complicate things sometimes). It was futile, these steps would not be counted. This is when a thought came to my mind. The steps are not being recorded but they still happened. I will forget about them and my Garmin watch won't know they happened, but they did.
In the course of our professional journey, there are victories that often occur in the shadows, unnoticed by our co-workers, our leaders, and perhaps even the outside world. These are the accomplishments we achieve when no one is looking, the extra effort we invest, and the sacrifices we make quietly but resolutely. This is when we put in the additional hours to hone our skills, the gaps we bridge in domain knowledge and expertise, the effort in making connections and collaboration behind the scenes, and the ways we continuously learn, adapt, and evolve.
We do it because it is who we are. Because we recognize that, in the end, we are the ones who must bear the consequences, whether they be wins or losses, successes or failures. Our integrity hinges on our commitment to doing what's right, even when no one is watching, in that unwavering and often elusive pursuit of excellence.
There is a Proverb that says "Whoever walks in integrity walks securely." Integrity is not a mere buzzword; it serves as the bedrock upon which we construct our careers and our lives. It means making the right choices in the absence of external scrutiny, assuming responsibility for our actions, and persistently striving for self-improvement.
When we lay our heads on our pillows at night, we are acutely aware of the authenticity of our efforts. We understand our accomplishments, areas of excellence, and the work that remains to be done in order to bridge the gaps in our journey. These concealed triumphs define our character and shape our path to success.
So my challenge to you is, to celebrate the unseen wins. Do a happy dance when nobody is watching when you killed it in a presentation or after a day well fought. These wins stand as evidence of our commitment, resilience, and unyielding dedication to our personal and professional development.
