For those who have been connected with me for a while, you will know that I like to write a blog or two (158 to be exact!). But lately, it's been difficult to get the time and focus to keep this consistent so I had a genius idea - hire myself! We recently caught up with Bobbie Dickinson, who took an exciting step in her career at Animal Friends at the beginning of 2024 when she took on her new role of Complaints Team Leader. Congratulations, Bobbie! Can you tell us a bit about your Animal Friends journey so far? "I joined Animal Friends in 2020 as a Retention agent, progressing to a Senior role in the Sales department; I then moved back to Retention as a Senior. Over the last year I worked as part of a team helping to train new starters before their official move into their departments before I applied for the Complaints Team Leader role in January 2024." What attracted you to the role of Complaints Team Leader? "I wanted to experience something new at Animal Friends; this role gives me lots of insight into different departments across the business and offers plenty of opportunity for further progression." What advice would you give to a colleague looking to take the next step in their career? "Don’t be afraid to reach out within or outside of your department! You may not know everything straight away, but it can be learnt and the skills you already have can be used across departments. "Help! We've accidentally put a dog's dangly bits on the front of our Spring/Summer brochure...!" Not something you read on LinkedIn every day, but this is a genuine email I once received from a client. Last week, I was sharing #crisiscomms stories with a fellow PR professional and it made me think about all the scenarios I'd experienced during my years. Unsurprisingly, this one stands out as the most memorable client email I've ever received. The brand had used a puppy within its product photography and, unfortunately, it was very pleased to be part of the brand's marketing... too pleased. The design department had missed this in the editing stage and the brand - a major fashion retailer - had unknowingly sent all its customers its new brochure with the dog's bits on the front. The faux pas hadn't gone unnoticed by a growing number of customers, who had taken to social media to share the image. Soon after, The Daily Mirror got hold of the story and shared it online. Luckily, the brand saw the funny side and was able to use humour to resolve what could have potentially been a big 'cock up'. This is a prime example of how humour can be an effective tool in all communications. In the right scenario, it can also be used in crisis comms (a prime example is the Aldi Vs M&S 'Caterpillar Wars' court case). The brand issued a light-hearted and self-deprecating response; laughing at the mistake. This strengthened customer relationships and won the retailer a legion of new fans. You often see job seekers sharing this information about themselves on their LinkedIn profiles and CVs. ‘A keen interest’. From a candidate branding perspective, having 'a keen interest' isn't a particularly convincing or inspiring message. It's not a great differentiator. Some one might have a keen interest in baking, gardening or football - it doesn't necessarily make them a great baker, gardener or football manager.
