International Day for Refugees , we honor the resilience and strength of refugees worldwide, reminding us of our collective responsibility to support those displaced by conflict, persecution, or natural disasters. Egypt exemplifies this commitment by providing refuge and integration opportunities for Palestinian, Sudanese, and Syrian refugees, showcasing solidarity and dedication to human dignity. The refugee crisis is also a matter of global health and social justice, as refugees face significant health challenges and need equitable access to medical care. On this International Day for Refugees, let’s reaffirm our commitment to supporting refugees through advocacy for protective policies, support for humanitarian organizations, and raising awareness to foster understanding and empathy. Together, we can build a world where every individual lives in safety and dignity. #Egypt #InternationalDayForRefugees #RefugeeSupport #GlobalHealth #SocialJustice #Support #Solidarity

## Advocating for Refugees at the Kenya Model UN I recently had the opportunity to participate in the 24th Session of the Kenya Model United Nations Refugee Competition. This event brought together passionate individuals from across the country to discuss pressing issues facing refugees and advocate for their rights. The global refugee crisis continues to escalate, with millions of people displaced by conflict, persecution, and the devastating impacts of climate change. Now, more than ever, there is a critical need to address the root causes of displacement, protect the rights of refugees, and provide sustainable support to host communities. By fostering dialogue, building partnerships, and empowering youth to become agents of change, we can work towards a more just and equitable future for all. https://lnkd.in/dxaX3iyM

[Did you know?] HouseInc (2024-2027) will investigate housing inequality, with an emphasis on energy poverty and examine how housing inequality impacts leisure, mobility, employment and health. Social justice is at the heart of HouseInc and the project will support the most vulnerable communities by identifying the systemic barriers to housing equality, focusing on vulnerable communities living in Eastern European communities or those that have migrated from Eastern Europe, especially Ukrainians. By taking a holistic approach, HouseInc will provide solutions that aim to relieve the burden of housing inequality in 4 marginalised communities in Europe (Roma communities (in Czech Republic and Romania) as well as Ukrainian refugees (in Italy) and migrants from Eastern Europe (in Germany). The partners will conduct qualitative research in these pilots to identify drivers in marginalised communities and develop and categorise pathways of interlinkages. Eurocities has recently shared a video to remind that cities stand with Ukraine and will continue to support Ukrainian refugees. "#CitieswithUkraine - the voice of refugees". Since the war began, thousands of Ukrainians have lost their lives, families have been torn apart, and communities have been displaced, forced to flee their homes in search of safety and shelter. In response, cities across Europe have welcomed and integrated millions of Ukrainian refugees, as well as providing funding, aid and equipment to their sister cities in Ukraine. https://lnkd.in/dgq5a7GP and read more: https://lnkd.in/eXMiP3sB

Creating a comprehensive system to help refugees start a new life abroad involves several key components. This system would need to address immediate needs upon arrival, provide long-term support for integration, and ensure refugees can become self-sufficient. Below are the main components and steps for such a system: 1. Initial Reception and Immediate Assistance • Reception Centers: Establish centers where refugees can receive immediate care upon arrival. These centers should provide shelter, food, clothing, and medical care. • Legal Assistance: Provide help with asylum applications, legal status, and understanding rights in the host country. • Language Support: Offer initial translation services and basic language courses to help refugees communicate. 2. Basic Needs and Support Services • Housing: Secure temporary housing solutions that can transition to more permanent arrangements. • Healthcare: Ensure access to medical and psychological care, including support for trauma and mental health issues. • Education: Facilitate access to education for children and adults, including language courses and vocational training. 3. Integration Programs • Language Training: Offer comprehensive language courses to ensure proficiency in the host country’s language. • Cultural Orientation to understand language and learn. #LetsWelcomeRefugees #EmbraceEachOther
From Sudan to Ukraine, from the Middle East to Myanmar to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and beyond, conflict, climate chaos and upheaval are forcing record numbers of people from their homes and fueling profound human suffering. The latest figures show that a total of more than 120 million people around the world are forcibly displaced, including 43.5 million refugees. #WorldRefugeeDay is about honouring their strength and courage – and stepping up efforts to protect and support refugees. They need global solidarity and the ability to rebuild their lives in dignity. Let's reaffirm the world’s collective responsibility in assisting and welcoming refugees, in upholding their human rights - including the right to seek - and ultimately, in resolving conflicts so that those forced from their communities can return home.

📽 More than 100 million people are forcibly displaced worldwide. And most will not be able to go back home any time soon. They face the challenge of having to rebuild their lives elsewhere. To help displaced people become more self-reliant as they do so, different actors – including humanitarian and development organizations – have been increasingly working together to foster refugees’ economic and social inclusion. To gauge how effective this approach has been so far, we partnered up with ISDC - International Security and Development Center to look at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s work in Colombia, Jordan & Kenya. Our research confirmed that efforts to include refugees in local development programs are yielding tangible benefits – for both refugees and the communities that host them. Check out our main findings and recommendations to governments, humanitarians & development actors: https://lnkd.in/dKed6d_u. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' Call to Uphold Refugee Rights: A Global Imperative UN SG Antonio Guterres' recent statement on World Refugee Day underscores the critical global imperative of upholding the rights and dignity of refugees. By reaffirming the world's collective responsibility to assist and welcome refugees, Guterres highlights a fundamental human rights issue that transcends borders and politics. Guterres emphasizes that refugees have the inherent right to seek asylum and protection, principles enshrined in international law and conventions. This stance not only reaffirms nations' moral obligation to provide sanctuary to those fleeing persecution but also stresses the need for comprehensive support systems ensuring refugees can rebuild their lives with dignity and security. Furthermore, Guterres' call to resolve conflicts to enable refugees to return home underscores the interconnectedness of peace, stability, and refugee crises. Addressing root causes of displacement is crucial for sustainable solutions, reflecting a proactive approach to preventing and mitigating humanitarian crises. In essence, Guterres' message resonates as a timely reminder of our shared humanity and collective duty to uphold human rights in the face of displacement and crisis. It calls for concerted international efforts not only to assist refugees but also to address underlying conflicts perpetuating their displacement, thereby fostering conditions where everyone can live in safety and dignity in their own communities.

As a community development specialist, I strongly believe that community-based solutions are essential to supporting refugees and IDPs. By empowering these individuals and their communities, we can help them rebuild their lives, integrate into their new surroundings, and contribute positively to society. Here are some specific actions that communities can take to support refugees and IDPs: - Facilitate language/cultural training: Aid refugees/IDPs in learning local language/customs for community integration and accessing essential services. - Create job opportunities: Employment for refugees/IDPs fosters self-sufficiency, income, and a sense of belonging. - Support education/skills: Grant access to education/skill programs empowering them to contribute economically. - Encourage social inclusion: Organize events fostering connections with locals, fostering friendships and a sense of belonging. - Advocate for rights: Collaborate with refugees/IDPs to ensure equal access to services and opportunities, advocating for their rights and well-being. #advocacy #refugeeempowerment #refugeeforum UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Switzerland for UNHCR UNHCR Canada United Nations
