"Power tends to corrupt; absolute power currupts absolutely." - Lord Acton My personal preference would be to remove most government functions, like those with which the SEC is purportedly tasked. Private individuals and organizations will more than fill the void, as long as government exists to ensure unbiased transparency (which it can only do if it is not a principal and is acting solely as an agent, which it can do only if it does not have critical functions as a principal). In an ideal world we have government that functions from an open source code repository and has no real-time human input, other than voting on and implementing code changes, all entirely in the open. This would ensure absolute transparency and remove hidden biases, allowing citizens to focus on those present in the codebase. Furthermore, this would help promote and validate legitimate journalism while miminizing the hearsay and opinion-driven societal chasms overtaking every "free" democracy on earth.
