I’ve always believed football isn’t just about elite competition, performance, and rankings. Sport is about so much more than that. It’s also about creating opportunities for sectors that might not otherwise engage with it. That's why I was thrilled to hear about The Street Child World Cup 2026. It's a global event where teams of young people who've experienced homelessness or street living come together to play football. The purpose of this event is threefold: → Raise awareness about the challenges faced by children living and working on the streets. → Provide a platform for these children to share their stories. → Call for change and demand that their rights be protected. Remember: Football holds potential beyond winning and losing. It can make a positive difference in the lives of children and communities worldwide, creating opportunities for those who suffer from health issues, disabilities, and inequalities. So, thank you, Street Child United, for organizing this global event.

Across domains, there is an observable return of meaning-based constructs and explanations as ways to make deep sense of things.   This revised and re-purposed second study of my PhD “Our city our Crew: Sense of place, cultural entrepreneurship and ‘thick’ cultural resistance in the #SaveTheCrew movement” was my first attempt at moving across disciplines to place meaning front and centre in the analysis of social goings on.   We used Sense of Place (broadly, the collection of meanings people assign to place) and Cultural Entrepreneurship (how actors draw from and harness the cultural milieu to gain favour and support for their entrepreneurial ideas and ventures) to explore how fans of a football club crafted a culturally resonant narrative to provide ‘thick’ and strategic resistance to attempts to relocate their team.   Meanings assigned to place can be central discursive tools to mobilise resistance, showing that fans are not mere passive consumers but agentic cultural actors who can play a significant role in shaping decisions that are made concerning their teams and the communities that house them.   More broadly, ideas of place and what/how people draw from the cultural repertoire has significance not only in the analysis, but in communicating what might be of most importance and beyond that, how to push forward alternative paths and futures that are plausible, resonant, and meaningful. https://lnkd.in/eNwifW23

They are born into situations of poverty, war, or illness that stop them from enjoying this wonderful sport. For these kids, playing football is not just about having a good time. It's about feeling like they belong, making friends, and feeling good about themselves. For a child growing up, having a passion like football and a place where they can hang out with others is really important!! Remember, the impact of football goes beyond the field. It can be a catalyst for positive change, improving children's well-being, fostering teamwork, and building character. By taking responsibility and using the power of football, we can contribute to making the world a better place, one child at a time. Let's be the change we want to see.
