My research has found this expectation to lead towards dishonesty, secrecy, and isolation. However, embracing a more authentic approach requires two key elements to get started: 1. Courage - Stepping away from conventional norms to become more authentic is a bold move. 2. Safe People & Places - Surround yourself with individuals who are also on the path to authenticity. Great thing about studying global leadership is that you learn about eastern philosophy and often find universal truths that can be put into western leadership practice ! This is one of my favorites, and my interpretation of it, the three I’s. Integrity - How do we act and what decisions do we make when no one is looking or when we have something to lose personally if we do the right thing? Insight - How many people at all levels of our organization are we listening to and asking the right questions so that we can make decisions with the collective wisdom and knowledge of others? I grew up in a Corporate America where I was taught I was a leader if: 👉🏿 I had an office with a door that closed 👉🏿 I was on the org chart in a big box, with lots of little boxes under me 👉🏿 I could tell a lot of people what to do & they would drop everything and do it And yet none of these actually define what makes a leader. More importantly what makes a great leader. It’s about our actions that inspire others. To dream more. To learn more. To do more. That’s what makes us leaders.
