According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ youth are at risk because of a lack of acceptance, understanding, empathy, and compassion. That lack comes at a great cost: a national survey conducted in 2023 found 41% of LGBTQ+ youth have seriously considered suicide in the last year. In fact, 2022 research by Phreesia and Klick Health found that nearly 1 in 4 #LGBTQ+ patients felt “not at all confident” that they knew what preventive screenings to schedule. Even though Pride Month has come to an end, our commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community in adult social care settings remains strong. While there has been an improvement in meeting the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals in many aspects, we still lack appropriate support in social care services. There is also an assumption that all older people are grandparents and have family to fall back on when their health declines and they need support. However, 90% of LGBTQ+ people are ageing without children, and many have little contact with their biological families. This increases the need for more formal support and care services in later life. Although the number of LGBTQ+ seniors will double in ten years, there are few, if any, existing care schemes with a focus on older LGBTQ+ residents. The same is true of care homes. That’s why we believe that live-in care offers an excellent alternative for those seeking care in an inclusive and supportive environment. The NHPCO Diversity Advisory Council (DAC) published the results of a first-of-its-kind study exploring perceptions of hospice care within LGBTQ+ communities, among others. Along with key research findings, the Hospice Through the DEI Lens report offers recommendations for providers to help increase understanding of hospice care and help overcome barriers to access.     Throughout #PrideMonth, we will highlight LGBTQ+ community-focused findings of this research and recommendations to act based on the findings.   Nearly one-third of LGBTQ+ respondents doubt or are unsure that hospice would respect their sexuality. Many respondents would be willing to believe that a hospice company was accepting of their lifestyle if that hospice had a member of the LGBTQ+ community in a decision-making role.    To help remedy this, prospective LGBTQ+ patients need reassurance that they will be treated with respect by providers.
