The statistics on the impact of mental health challenges at work shared by Headspace are sobering. They echo what I see with my clients, as well. Here’s what I hear from the high-achievers I serve ✅98% feel stressed and anxious ✅80% having trouble sleeping ✅88% have relationship challenges at home or work ✅More than 75% are thinking of leaving their job And the list goes on. Almost 100% report craving more time for their own health, wellbeing and enjoyment of life. They want high impact at work and at home. Companies can't "mental health support" their way out of a crummy culture of extra work, "do more with less," pressure to do the impossible, and abusive leadership. This report is evidence that employee mental health issues don't stem from lack of self care or mental support. They stem from work cultures hell bent on creating the very mental problems they purport to support. Businesses must first invest in developing a quality culture and accurately measure it through effective employee satisfaction surveys (not questions designed to skirt the known issues), employee retention measurements, and internal career growth monitoring. People want meaningful work, they want to grow in their skills and development, and they need balance to perform at their highest. No matter the industry, people are the reason every business exists. Put people first, and the possibilities are endless ✨

Leadership and management have a direct impact on an employee’s work-related stress. Likewise, the way that leaders and managers handle their responsibilities directly influences their own work-related stress. It’s clear, and this data helps support it, that when leaders get it wrong, the negative consequences extend far beyond the workplace. When we get right, however, the positive ripple effects can improve so much more than just an employee’s work life. Brush up on your leadership skills and I’ll keep sharpening my saw as well. Let’s do better and it will pay dividends beyond our expectations.
