History Matters! As we step into Black History Month, I am once again reminded of how much of our history is untold. From the many unsung heroes who innovated, created, healed, and sacrificed to the many atrocities endured under the law from slavery to Jim Crow. Recently, I had an open conversation about plantations, lynching postcards - yes, you read correctly - and the Jim Crow era during a 45-minute Uber ride to the airport. Here is what struck me: 1. My non-Black colleagues leaned into an uncomfortable conversation, seeking to understand and refusing to disown that past. 2. They had not been aware of 95% of that history. It's not taught - you have to seek it out. 3. When you have a conversation with love, without blame, the knowledge of true history allows us to interrupt incorrect narratives, recognize flawed inputs, and strive to educate others. I'm thankful for the open and thoughtful dialogue we were able to have. My hope is that more of these conversations can lead to greater awareness, understanding, and positive change. We should always seek to understand the inputs that drive the outputs in both business and life. History is the key. Please, push past what you know, your assumptions, and learn and be curious. Have courage to travel the road less traveled. Hopefully you will come out the other side with compassion, empathy, and ready to create change. #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #blackhistorymonth #Beintentional
