I find this #AML story regarding a Frank Auerbach painting baffling. As someone who has worked in the art market for over 25 years, I don't know of any auction house that would simply issue a loan of £5 million against collateral of a painting that sold for £1.6 million in 2017, when even by 2022 prices such a work would be worth about £2.5 million at most – or that it would do so without rigorous checks. Such loans at all from auction houses are a new one on me. And what does the NCA mean when it says "It’s believed the painting was subsequently used by another individual as collateral to secure a £5m loan from a UK auction house"? Does this mean it was used as collateral or just that the #NCA thinks it was? Some clarity is required here for such potentially damaging allegations against the market. #artmarket https://lnkd.in/d5SzE2b2
