NO MORE DESTRUCTION OF UNSOLD TEXTILE After extensive negotiations within the #EU, a significant milestone has been achieved! The latest version of the EcoDesign for Sustainable Products not only includes a ban on the destruction of unsold textiles by 2028 but also surpasses the #EuropeanCommission’s initial proposal. The original plan focused solely on companies reporting unsold product volumes. Additionally, the newly outlined regulations introduce a digital product passport. This passport will contain vital details about a product, including its composition, availability of spare parts, energy efficiency, percentage of recycled materials used, and its recyclability. What's next on the agenda? The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), approved by the European Council on 23 April 2024, is set to bring transformative changes to the textile industry. This regulation expands the scope of the previous Ecodesign Directive, setting comprehensive sustainability requirements for a wide range of products, including textiles. Here’s how OEKO-TEX® products can support suppliers in complying with the ESPR, and the benefits of obtaining our certifications.

The future is circular 🚀 🌍 ♻ Mandatory EPR rules for textiles come into place in the EU in 2025. The Vision for 2030 is that all textile products placed on the EU market are; • durable, repairable and recyclable • to a great extent made of recycled fibres • free of hazardous substances • produced respecting social rights That's a lot for businesses to get to work on, as each of those areas is complex and will need to operate at scale. EPR is a policy approach to put more responsibility onto the producers for the entire lifecycle of their products. A key principle behind EPR is to internalise environmental costs associated with products, by incentivising producers to reduce waste. 💡A provisional agreement on #Ecodesign Regulation is in place between the EU institutions. We are very close to setting performance and information requirements for certain products and moving towards more circular, industries and societies, with #textiles being the priority group. Products like clothing will have requirements in the future, hopefuly setting a more holistic benchmark for the concept of "sustainability" at product level. This may entail durability criteria, with the need to meet testing requirements, repairability criteria, as well as fiber-to-fiber recycled content, and others. This legislation also instigates the #digitalproductpassport to ensure transparency to consumers, as well as authorities, so citizens can make better "sustainable" choices and market surveillance authorities can more effectively carry out their duties. Also, a ban on destructions of unsold goods is in place. All with the implementation period foreseen 2026-2027. Next steps: #europeancommission shall work on the first working plan, establishing which product shall be targeted, and continue the work on delegated acts, which will determine the specific criteria for product groups. Exciting… News from the European Parliament regarding product and environmental sustainability! 🌍🌱 Earlier in July, they agreed on a negotiating mandate for the proposed Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), a major step towards a greener future. The ESPR aims to replace the current Ecodesign Directive and extend sustainability requirements to ALL types of products, not just energy-related ones. Key highlights of the European Parliament's position: 1.     Prioritising Impactful Products: The proposal identifies high-impact product groups, including textiles, iron, steel, aluminium, furniture, tyres, paints, and chemicals, for new ecodesign requirements. 2.     Ban on Destruction of Unsold Products: If accepted, the ESPR will ban the destruction of unsold textiles, footwear, and electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) for one year after its adoption. This goes beyond previous proposals from the European Commission and Council. 3.     Fighting Premature Obsolescence: The Parliament introduces a ban on premature obsolescence, ensuring products last longer and reduce waste. While some green organizations applauded this progressive stance, concerns about noncompliant products sold via online marketplaces remain. As negotiations begin, further discussions are expected.
