Unleashing the Shift from Disability to Discovering Ability | Leading at The Accidental Ally | Transforming Disability Employment | LinkedIn Top Voice

"Why are you doing this?" is a question I get asked often. I talk to a lot of parents of children with #cognitive and #intellectual disabilities. Most often they want to know if I have a child with a disability. What is the motivation to run a company like The Accidental Ally ? I don't have children with disabilities. So then why am I doing this? I spoke to a mom recently who did an excellent job asking all the right questions. At one point in the conversation she said, "To be honest, this sounds too good to be true". She was having a hard time believing a few things - that I had left a financially secure career in tech to focus on our mission, that we dont charge a penny to train people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities, that we are not a staffing or recruiting agency for the disabled, that we are not a state approved vendor providing services to the disabled, that we run predominantly as a cost neutral business with a goal to convince employers to invest in the future of talented young people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities. I could sense her thinking, 'What's the catch?'. At the end of the conversation, she said, "I am sold". I told her I was not selling her anything. I am here to create a blueprint to showcase that the talents of people with cognitive and intellectual disabilities can be harnessed to deliver tangible business outcomes, that they can do much more than what is expected of them, that the time has come for us to raise the bar of expectations, to create opportunities to allow them to contribute to the workforce inclusively and equitably. So why am I doing this? I have a few ways to answer that question - As a tech professional, I believe harnessing the creative abilities of these individuals who are extreme users of technology will unlock the next wave of digital innovation that will benefit everyone. As a mom, I believe we need to cultivate a growth mindset for these individuals who have been offered nothing but the opposite from their community. The bar is set too low for them. We need to change that and create opportunities for them to dream big and create pathways for them to achieve their dreams. As a small town girl, I was not expected to do much more than get married, have children and be a homemaker. I was fortunate to have met so many people who saw potential in me and created opportunities for me to explore that potential. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for those opportunities. As Gayatri, the woman I am today, I do this work for that sparkle in their eyes every time they learn something new, achieve a new milestone, interact with their friends, laugh out loud at something funny. That sparkle is hope, it is belief, it is confidence, it is conviction, it is grit and so much more. I do this work because I love them. And for me, that love is what keeps me going!
