Continuous progress allows us to create sustainable change ♻️ 🙌🏼 GIZ is taking active steps to support ASEAN in addressing the global challenges in waste management. One of the initiatives under the ASEAN German portfolio aiming at combatting marine litter, 3RproMar, has just convened the Fourth Project Steering Committee (PSC) on 25 June 2024. In the meeting, GIZ is proud to share the project’s progress with the ASEAN Working Group on Coastal and Marine Environment (AWGCME) and representatives from ASEAN Member States (AMS). 🏛️ The meeting, hosted by the Department of Water Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Lao PDR, noted the advancements both on regional and national level in the four implementation countries of 3RproMar: Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Viet Nam. Best practices and knowledge we gathered, especially from our local pilot sites, were exchanged with the AMS to ensure that local experiences are adequately represented and made available regionally. 🤝 In addition, the meeting discussed the future trajectory of the project, including new interventions, the possibility of expanding the implementation areas, and the linkages with other German Government (BMZ) funded project, namely the ASEAN Municipal Solid Waste Management (AMUSE). Mrs. Sumana Kajonwattanakul, on behalf of the AWGCME Chair, emphasised through her remarks the cruciality of the #marine environment as a lifeline for the region, and that good exchanges on insights and expertise from AMS and the region collectively are essential to the success of our efforts to protect the marine environment. 💧 Sustainable mineral water management 💧 We attach particular importance to the protection and sustainable use of our natural resources. Mineral water is also one of these vital resources, and we are committed to protecting it as part of our daily work. We recently took part in an expert workshop organized by the European Mineral Water Association - Natural Mineral Waters Europe (NMWE). The main topic of the workshop in Brussels, which was attended by other experts from all over Europe, was "Sustainable water management in the mineral water sector". Our branch manager in Kassel, Jörg Reuther, represented the Verband Deutscher Mineralbrunnen - VDM. Although only a small proportion of the groundwater extracted in Europe is used to produce natural mineral water - about one ten-thousandth - the NMWE strives to have a significant, positive impact on sustainable water management. During the expert workshop, participants discussed the challenges, opportunities and possibilities for the sector to increase holistic and sustainable protection of the mineral water resource. One of the key tasks derived from the workshop is the definition of suitable indicators for measuring sustainable water management, also taking climate change into account. Experts exchanged views on what needs to be considered, measured and monitored in different situations when securing, extracting and producing natural mineral water. In addition, presentations outlined and discussed topics such as biodiversity, water stewardship and potentials of possible measures for the sustainable use of mineral water as a resource. We will continue to continuously apply and expand our expertise and efforts in mineral and groundwater protection to ensure sustainable use for generations to come. Follow us to stay up to date. Together, we are shaping a sustainable future! 🌍💙 #hpcag #sustainability #watermanagement #sustainablewatermanagement #waterquality #mineralwater

10th World Water Forum, one of the key arenas for global #watergovernance, is in full swing in Bali this week. Highlights for GOVAQUA: 🤝 EU launches a new initiative supporting peer-learning between lake and river basin organisations with International Network of Basin Organisations, hosted by the GOVAQUA partner International Office for Water. 💧 EU announces its joining of the #FreshWaterChallenge, a collective action initiative with an aim to restore 300,000 km of degraded rivers and 350 million hectares of degraded wetlands by 2030 worldwide. GOVAQUA studies good practices of aligning public, private and civil society efforts and targets in collective action. 📖 OECD Environment "Handbook of What Works - Solutions for the Local Implementation of the OECD Principles on Water Governance" provides a highly interesting compendium of evolving practices, intended to support and inspire water governance decision makers around the world. GOVAQUA joins the effort and is currently working on: 🔎 Developing a water governance self-assessment tool tailored to sub-national settings 💡 Building a repository of tried, tested and validated innovative water governance instruments, approaches and arrangements that advance sustainable and equitable water use 🌌 Formulating pathways and action perspectives relevant for different levels of water governance across sectors and regions in Europe 🌱 The Handbook presents a case study of the multi-stakeholder collaboration at the heart of the Archipelago Sea Basin Programme in Finland. GOVAQUA partner Finnish Environment Institute supports Varsinais-Suomen ELY-keskus in the Programme implementation via a #LivingLab process in 2024-2026 focusing on #waterstewardship in food value chain and #impactinvestments, and develops governance assessment tools for monitoring and evaluation.
