📊 UNEP Adaptation Gap Report: Climate Reality 🌍 The UNEP's annual report focuses on advanced climate adaptation strategies, emphasizing Nature-Based Solutions (NBSs). Governments and businesses must take urgent action to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 42 per cent by 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5°C, according to the Emissions Gap Report 2023. In addition to providing an update on where global greenhouse gas emissions are heading and where they should be, the report focuses on energy transitions in low- and middle-income countries and looks at the role of carbon dioxide removal in countering the climate crisis. #climatechange #COP28 #below3degree

Around 200 countries will meet for the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference, COP 28, from 30 November to 12 December in Dubai, UAE. This year’s conference will feature the United Nation’s first-ever “global stocktake”, wherein countries will assess their progress since the Paris Agreement of limiting global warming to 1.5°C from pre-industrial levels. Sharing my latest op-ed on GMA Network, Inc.'s News Online, on the importance of the upcoming UN climate negotiations (COP28) in Dubai, UAE for the Philippine climate and development agenda. It explores questions that needs to be asked, that has been raised by many advocates worldwide, and even a few Philippine government leaders in the past few years: if the global negotiations have failed to accelerate climate action to match the rate of climate change in the past three decades and meet the needs of the most vulnerable countries and communities, are the climate COPs a waste of time? Why should the Philippines continue to engage in this process? The work continues. #ClimateActionPH #COP28 "Furthermore, any system, no matter how well-designed, would become inefficient or fully ineffective if not properly implemented or many of its participants fail to live up to their commitments. It is up to those partaking in COPs to keep demanding transparency and accountability to those either not fulfilling their obligations or looking to slow down its progress, through all available means." 🌍 The Paris Agreement: Paving the Way for Global Climate Action 🌎 Yesterday, I had a conversation with a friend about the Paris Agreement, and it got me thinking. Sometimes, we assume that everyone knows what we're talking about when it comes to critical topics like climate change, but that's not always the case. 🌿 🤝 What is the Paris Agreement? It's a global treaty adopted in 2015 during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris. Its mission: to unite countries in the fight against climate change. 🌏 📜 Key Objectives: The agreement seeks to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with an aspiration to limit it to 1.5 degrees. This is crucial to prevent the most severe impacts of climate change. 🌡️ 💼 Country Commitments: Each participating country (known as a Party) submits its climate action plan, called a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). These plans outline how they'll reduce emissions and adapt to climate change. 💪 Global Solidarity: The Paris Agreement demonstrates the world's commitment to working together. 𝗨𝗡 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿"𝟭.𝟱°𝗖 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴" 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘀 At a side event during the UN climate talks in Bonn, the Conference of Parties (COP) presidencies of the UAE, Azerbaijan and Brazil emphasized the need for upcoming national climate plans (NDCs) to adhere to a 1.5°C global warming limit. These COP presidencies have committed to lead by example, pledging to publish "1.5-aligned" plans by early next year. There is ambiguity surrounding what qualifies as a "1.5-aligned" NDC, as there is no internationally agreed methodology for this determination, leaving it up to individual countries. According to the IPCC aligning with 1.5°C plan means reducing global emissions by 43% by 2030 and 60% by 2035. However, there are national breakdowns provided to support this goal. While there may be disagreements on what constitutes a 1.5-aligned NDC, such plans must exclude any expansion of fossil fuel production and exports.  No government took the opportunity in Bonn to release an early NDC. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has released its annual Emissions Gap Report, which finds that predicted 2030 emissions must be reduced by at least 28-42% compared to current policy scenarios, to reach the Paris Agreement goals of limiting global warming to 2°C and 1.5°C, respectively.

The COP conference is an annual meeting where United Nations member states convene to assess progress in dealing with climate change and make a plan for climate action within the guidelines of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). The COP is the supreme decision-making body of the Convention and has been held since 1995 in different locations around the world. The latest COP conference was COP 26, which took place in Glasgow, United Kingdom, in October-November 2021. The focus of COP 26 was to finalize the rules for implementing the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C, preferably to 1.5°C, compared to pre-industrial levels. The conference also aimed to increase the ambition and action of countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. Share for others to learn.!!
