It's Here! Rhodri Davies' article on MrBeast Philanthropy! 😭We've got grandiose acts of philanthropy and expect effusive displays of gratitude(🎭DRAMA). "Gratitude on the part of those receiving his surprise gifts is an essential part of his videos".
👍MrBeast primarily generates philanthropic funds through advertising revenue linked to viewer engagement. "Like and Subscribe so we can keep saving the world."
🚗Drive-by philanthropy makes solving complex issues look easy and paints recipients as passive, highlighting the power imbalance between the giver and the receiver.
👏 I watch these videos with my kids and am into it (have you seen the one where they launch a train into a hole in the ground for no reason, fantastic). His model and motivations for charitable giving are far from perfect. The MrBeast way doesn't align with my values of partnering with and portraying beneficiaries...but I believe the good intention is there. He's 25. MrBeast and his team will get there with a knowledgeable charitable giving coach ( #coughcough🙋♀️).
If you're in philanthropy and not keeping up with Rhodri Davies, then what are you doing?

ICYMI: Never heard of MrBeast or his philanthropy and wondering what all the fuss is about?
Or perfectly well aware of him (probably via your kids), but don't know what to make of his approach to giving?
Either way, check out my new article in the Journal of Philanthropy and Marketing "Good intent, or just good content? Assessing MrBeast's philanthropy", which explores what "Beast Philanthropy" is and tries to offer a balanced assessment of whether we should welcome it or worry about it.
