The Friday before a new hire's start date... There are nerves. Think about the last time you were a new hire and all the stuff that was on your mind. So we have two new hires starting in Dallas on Monday, and I texted them both to make sure they have everything they need. And I also volunteered that "hey you will also have a fellow new hire joining on Monday and they're awesome and you'll love meeting them and you're probably going to be best friends." The responses were full of "Yay!"'s and "I'm so excited!"'s and "OBE is awesome!"'s. And we have two new hires ready to go. And they are about to have a new best friend. Because #candidateexperience. Moving to a new city out of undergrad is hard. You often have to build community started knowing no one or without the safety net of going to school or being on a college campus. Here are 7 things I’ve learned about how to create community in a new city. 1. Be open to meeting new people outside of your school or company network 2. Host your own rooftop parties in the summer or kickbacks in the fall/winter when it gets cold. Be the connector that brings people together 3. Try new hobbies. This is the hardest for most people, but this does make you a more well-rounded person and you get to meet people you may have never met 4. Don’t be discouraged when a friendship doesn't work out. Just because you are in the same city or in the same network does not mean you have to be friends 5. If you’re more introverted, bring a plus 1 to events. This can help when sparking conversation with new people 6. Create monthly or bi-weekly lunches for early career professionals at work. You’ll be surprised by how many new people you meet and how small the world is due to mutual connections 7. Don’t be too negative of the city you live in and your new life. Negativity brings upon more negativity. You want to be positive and optimistic to bring other people with a similar mindset into your life #Community

Last month I held bi-annual reviews / check ins with all the Upsource team And what a reminder it was of why we do this! (Founder life - sometimes you really need moments like this) It inspired me to write 5 reasons why I love my job: 1. The team loves making a difference - and they find solutions to make sure they always do 💡 2. We all have our own purpose, whether it's the freedom to be flexible, work around the kids, or work and travel. This job can just work ✈️👨👩👧👦 3. We all appreciate community and understand we can learn from each other and build relationships remotely 🌍🤝 4. I intentionally don't have a 'type of VA' we work with - which means a variety of personalities and skills. What is more interesting than that?! 🎨🌟 5. We are almost 4 years in business, and we have team members that have been with us from almost the very start to just a couple of months. Fresh eyes on the business but also people who quite like sticking around with us and our clients 🎉👥 What do you love about your job? Your business? Your team?

5 reasons it's easier to aim high in your career than low: 1. Most people shoot for the middle (leaving the top clear) 2. People with ambition attract help from mentors (they give you the cheat codes) 3. People with ambition attract an uplifting Community of peers (who become your cheersquad) 4. Going after your dream energises you (like putting a new engine in an old car) 5. Not going after your dream grinds you down (like driving with a flat tire) It might seem hard at first. But chasing your dream isn't nearly as tough as grinding through 45 years doing any old job.

The magic of building 💫 I spent the week with our Small but Mighty team in Stockholm. I do that every month so nothing unusual there 🇸🇪 I spent the weekend in Europe too, which is unusual as I normally always fly home to New York Thursday or Friday 👨👩👧👦🗽 During the weekend I’ve kept circling back to how great a week I had, which got me to reflect on why. Naturally a lot of factors play in to a week however I think the answer is simple: Nothing beats the energy that comes from building and the early stages of a journey. I’ve been fortunate to be part of two journeys at Dropbox and Templafy prior to joining Relesys. They were different in a lot of ways but the common denominator was that I got the opportunity to join early and gain unique and career defining experience. Building is not for everyone, which is fair. However if I can give one piece of general advice: If you have the opportunity to be one of the first persons on the ground in a new region/market and thus be part of a landing team - Do it! There are no guarantees for success and it’s hard. You will be doing a lot more than what your job description says. You will do a lot of things for the first time too. You will make a lot of mistakes. However one thing is certain: You get friendships and memories for life, your learning curve will accelerate immensenly, you will build resilience on a different level, and lastly your stock as candidate future roles will have increased exponentially 📈 Thanks for having me in Stockholm Viktoria, Olivia, Li, Georgios and Niklas.
