The PR industry runs on the fuel of your anxiety. Here’s my take on that thought. It is a theme that comes up time and again in client conversations. ⛽️ Certain behaviours fuel the successful careers of Comms people e.g. people-pleasing or perfectionism 🏆Work delivered on the back of these behaviours brings us reward in terms of salary, promotion, opportunity so we keep repeating those patterns 📣Truth: no one asked us to behave like this, it’s just what we’ve learned to do, often from very early in life. We carry on believing “it’s just who we are”. 👻 The scary bit is that we cannot sustain these behaviours for long because they are rooted in the belief that we always need to do more, be more, or that others have this nailed and we don’t. 😬And thats when we burnout, or leave the industry, or feel entitled to more recognition because we know what the effort is costing us in terms of how we feel. 🔋I believe you can have a healthier industry that is fuelled by a much ‘healthier’ workforce. 💵The industry needs to invest more in increasing the self-awareness for staff in these areas 👋🏻👋🏻 🤗Individuals need to look inwards and learn to grow a career without relying on assumptions and behaviours that shred their nerves.👋🏻👋🏻 Obviously there is nuance and complexity under the surface for each individual. Everyone is doing the best they can, and most workplaces aren’t toxic, but still we hear every day of burnout and industry departures. I can help you, or your team, with all of this. Please drop me a DM if you want to open up a conversation about it. #publicrelations #corporatecomms #internalcommunications

"🌊 Witnessing a New Wave in the Job Market 🌊 Lately, I've been observing a significant shift in the professional world. More and more people are choosing to start their own consulting businesses or become fractional, even contract workers. This trend seems to stem from a desire to escape the traditional employee microscope. As someone deeply committed to fostering a positive work culture, where feedback and empathy are paramount, this movement brings a mix of emotions. On one hand, it's disheartening. It suggests a growing dissatisfaction with current workplace environments and a failure in nurturing healthy employer-employee relationships. Yet, on the other hand, it's exhilarating to see individuals brimming with confidence in their skills, boldly stepping out to carve their own paths. This new wave, I believe, is a direct response to the subpar treatment prevalent in the job market – both from the hiring side and for those seeking employment. It's a call to action for organizations to re-evaluate and improve their work cultures, and an inspiring reminder of the resilience and adaptability of professionals today. #NewWorkTrends #ConsultingLife #PositiveWorkCulture #JobMarketShift"

#Careerstagnation is one pain point for a number of us in the employment circles. If unmanaged, it has potential to lead to mental health. It also creates an environment where we become demotivated. It is among the top challenges giving HR leaders sleepless nights as it demands of recruiters to craft strategies and policies to keep employees engaged. A feeling of stagnation implies that either; 1. We have overstayed in one position long enough that we no longer feel any purposeful 2. Our day to day deliverables are no longer challenging enough 3. Our financial needs have surpassed what the job is offering or rather our take home is lesser than our peers doing similar jobs 4. There are little to no prospects for promotion. 5. There are little to no learning opportunities 6. The organisation and/or my line manager does not have any plan for my growth 7. Office politics and poor culture has made it worthless to keep working hard. 8. The performance systems, training strategies and feedback and communication systems in the organisation are no longer working efficiently to identify top talent and seek ways to keep them engaged and motivated 9. We, as individuals, relaxed in our growth endeavours forgetting to update our plans and keeping track of the changes and warning signs in between. Either way, Career stagnation is definitely not a good feeling to have. Professional that thrives when challenged! I believe in giving 110% at all times and never stop learning.
The toxic work environment is a big one. It can be so stressful that you end up willing to do anything to get out of it, even if you take other hits but can get away from the sould sucking narcissist that is creating the toxic and unsafe space. There is a definite difference between managers and leaders. Once you have worked with leaders, managers become hard to follow.

If more managers in leadership positions had those positive traits, teams would absolutely have a higher chance of succeeding. However, on the flip side it isn’t only about this. Leaders must hold the team to a standard. Part of that is being the standard and setting clear goals and expectations in order to filter down the rest of the team. Finger pointing and barking orders is the opposite of this, it isn’t what we’re trying to do, and it’s the consequence of poor leadership. Especially poor leadership from authorities.

I totally agree and in my observations employers should invest more in their employees health and well being especially if they are being productivity in the workplace to create change for the operation of a company.

Toxic management can severely impact employee well-being and organizational effectiveness. It often manifests through behaviors such as micromanagement, favoritism, lack of transparency, and failure to address employee concerns. This toxic environment can lead to high turnover, decreased morale, and reduced productivity. Addressing toxic management requires promoting a culture of respect, open communication, and accountability, and providing training and support for managers to develop healthy leadership practices.

This week, someone laments the apparent futility of it all... "Dear (in)subordinate: I’ve been at the same job now for a while, and I’m really starting to hate it. My work is boring, repetitive, uninspiring, stressful at times, and needlessly bureaucratic – and the seemingly endless turnstile of incompetent managers doesn’t help either. I’d quit, but I need the $$$. Besides, I feel like anywhere else I might go things won’t be much better anyway, so why bother? At least I have some seniority here. But I used to care about what I do, and now I just go through the motions. Where is the job of my dreams??" – Name withheld Yeah – that sounds pretty bleak. So maybe this is as good an excuse as any to review The Gallup Organization’s “State of the Global Workplace” Report (2024), which was released earlier this month (available as a free download at their website). According to Gallup, 62% of the world’s workers are “not engaged” in their jobs. Another 15% are disengaged, they determined, meaning those employees actively oppose organizational goals. 58% of the global workforce also describe themselves as “struggling,” while another 8% say they are “suffering.” If you find yourself increasingly dissatisfied by your work situation, in other words, it seems you’re not alone. Employee wellbeing is also down according to Gallup’s research... (Read the full Q&A at: https://lnkd.in/eW8-kvpR.
