Equal Hope began its journey as a beacon of change. It was conceived from a profound idea — the acknowledgment that systemic racism lay at the root of healthcare disparities. Born out of a deep-seated belief in dismantling these barriers, Equal Hope emerged as a force for meaningful transformation in health outcomes. From July 2022 to October 2023, Equal Hope has guided 4,285 individuals to crucial healthcare appointments, ensuring they had access to vital medical services. The journey was not just a series of appointments; it was a transformation toward better health, a testament to the power of empathy and care. Today, the impact of Equal Hope echoes throughout the Chicago healthcare system. What began as a powerful idea has evolved into the city's largest, multi-institutional collaborative, standing firm against the tide of health inequities. Each new donor, every increased donation, becomes a narrative thread, weaving stories of change and hope into the fabric of the mission. Changing a healthcare system requires true collaboration, and Equal Hope has orchestrated this change with the support of generous donors and partners. It has been a collective effort, a story written not just by the organization but by every individual who has believed in the cause. As we approach the new year, your support through your time, skills, donations, and advocacy can help script the closing scenes our 2023 chapter. Join Equal Hope in writing the next chapter of this narrative, where every act of generosity becomes a turning point in the lives of those seeking health, equity, and hope.

Physician-Scientist. Tillman Scholar. Health Disparities Advocate. Fortune 500 Keynote Speaker. Community Cultivator. ChangeMaker.
“I want my patients to know that they can trust me because I have no intention whatsoever of abusing the perceived power dynamic between a physician and a patient.” Trust is the foundation of the physician-patient relationship. It’s essential that patients feel safe and respected when they come to us for care. The power dynamic inherent in this relationship can be daunting for many, especially those from marginalized communities who have historically faced discrimination and mistreatment in healthcare settings. As a physician, I am committed to breaking down these barriers. My goal is to create an environment where my patients feel empowered, heard, and valued. This means actively listening to their concerns, respecting their experiences, and involving them in their own healthcare decisions. It’s about partnership, not paternalism. I’ve learned that fostering this trust requires ongoing effort and genuine empathy. It involves acknowledging the power dynamics at play and making a conscious effort to level the field. By doing so, we can provide care that is not only effective but also equitable and compassionate. Here are a few principles I follow to build and maintain trust with my patients: 1. Active Listening: Truly hearing what patients are saying without interrupting or making assumptions. 2. Transparency: Being open about diagnoses, treatment options, and potential outcomes. 3. Respect: Valuing patients’ input and respecting their autonomy in decision-making. 4. Empathy: Understanding and validating patients’ feelings and experiences. 5. Advocacy: Standing up for patients’ needs and rights within the healthcare system. Building trust is not a one-time effort but a continuous commitment to ethical, respectful, and empathetic care. It’s about creating a safe space where patients feel confident that their well-being is the top priority. Many people ask how they can support the work that I am doing. My unequivocal answer is to follow The 15 White Coats on all social media platforms, visit our website at www.15wc.org, and make a tax-deductible donation to our organization. You can also purchase a sweatshirt to support The 15 White Coats. Please tell your friends about our nonprofit, which is dedicated to diversifying healthcare through scholarships. The best part is that none of us as leaders get paid, and all of us are minority physicians! #PatientTrust #CulturalCompetence #HealthEquity #BlackMenInMedicine #DiversityInHealthcare #PatientCare #InclusiveHealthcare #RepresentationMatters #15WhiteCoats #SupportDiversity #Nonprofit #Scholarships

A successful grateful engagement strategy elevates gratitude within health care organizations and enables a streamlined and robust approach to generating continuous pools of new prospective donors. Therefore, grateful engagement should be embraced by every member of the organization’s development team and should be a top priority for the organization’s daily work. "My grandson Graceson is autistic, and he has seizures. Dr. Patera has been instrumental in his health care plan. He was terrified of doctors, until he was under her care. She has formed a relationship with Graceson that no doctor was able to do. I don’t know where we would be without her or Advance Community Health." - Patricia, Pediatric Parent This is why your support of the Impact Fund matters. As we head toward Christmas, the season of giving, would you consider giving the gift of health and hope for kids like Graceson? "Never stop trying. Never stop believing. Never give up. Your day will come." - Mandy Hale 💙 It is so important to celebrate the small steps in life. Small steps can open the doors to change just so long as we keep moving. For the first time - EVER - a major medical organization, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, has created clinical practice guidelines for PMDD! It may be just one step, but what an important step for PMDD awareness! @acog_org We are so proud to be a reference and hope that many more sufferers will find their way to our IAPMD resources because of these new guidelines. We appreciate all of you who share our social posts and web links, make donations, organize fundraisers, provide IAPMD resources to local dr offices and on bulletin boards, talk to your peers about us, sign petitions, lobby, etc. And so, IAPMD celebrates our AMAZING community! Thanks to all of you who have so passionately contributed to bringing about change for those with premenstrual disorders! 🎉 And if you haven't already, take a moment to donate the cost of one cup of coffee. Our donation link for Giving Tuesday is still open through the weekend, and we could really use your help to reach our goal of $2000. We're not quite halfway there. iapmd.org/links ☕️ Here's to more research, education, advocacy, and treatment options! "Our pain and symptoms are often dismissed." Female physicians bring unique empathy and understanding to their practice, rooted in their own experiences in healthcare. 👩⚕️🚫 Yet, restrictive laws limit their ability to apply expertise, impacting patient care. We must champion policies supporting the freedom of ALL doctors. 📢 Let's push for a healthcare environment where female doctors thrive, bringing their knowledge and empathy to forefront. Advocate for removal of unnecessary barriers.
