Last month, an intimate group of forward-thinking nonprofit leaders and industry experts convened in the Redwoods outside San Francisco, led by Brett Hagler and the New Story team in partnership with Funraise. The purpose of the time was to exchange ideas and experiences among these leaders, all of whom are committed to scaling their impact. My takeaways from our time: 🌲 Slower can be faster. By pausing to find alignment and seek input from other qualified people, you can get you where you’re trying to go faster than you can if you’re sprinting in the wrong direction. 🌲 When you’re considering a big swing, ask yourself this question: Based on the impact you think you can have, would it be irresponsible not to try? 🌲 Big, ambitious goals are smart people bait. If you want to draw a talented team around you, be brave. The unique intimacy and high-quality content of the event seems to have struck a chord, meeting a need that’s gone unmet by other events in this space. This was an engaging and informative session about nonprofit jobs, re-skillling and trends related to the impact of AI at work. Hats off to Meg Garlinghouse interviewing style and Karin Kimbrough explaining the economic data in a very understandable way. Takeways …. Will the robots eat nonprofit jobs and should we all be worried? Data says … 12% of nonprofit job tasks will be augmented or change 39% of nonprofit job tasks disrupted Disrupted does not mean the job will be eliminated but it means that the job might shift to different tasks and require using or learning different skills (and that would need some re-skilling) For example, a fundraiser whose job is “disrupted,” may save a lot of time on desk prospect research and have more time to take donors out to lunch or cultivate. The faster growing job titles for nonprofits are: CIO, CTO, Director of Tech Also needed will be more board members who can think through tech and ethics. Good news is that you can find playbooks on board.dev and playbooks on LinkedIn. The most in-demand skill for nonprofits will be communication as AI is adopted. We will move to a world where we focus more on the skills than job descriptions or functions. There will be less of career ladder in one industry or function and will be able to move to other types of industries or job functions. We can all relax. AI is not eating your job, but your job will change and you will need to learn new skills. A key skill will be the ability to sustain life long learning.

It’s been a busy, yet fruitful week here in Chicago with the Salesforce OSC Community Sprint and the momentum heading into Nonprofit Dreamin. The uniqueness of this community is reflected in the groups, discussions, and incredible people that our Managing Partner Arthur Price met, but here are some of his key takeaways so far: 🔸 Nonprofits and those that support nonprofits crave more guidance around best practices in development operations. What’s the "golden mean" between hard core engineering processes and a team with no process working on top of each other? 🔸 Delivering consistent, quality solutions to our program teams begins with leadership and process commitments. Nonprofit leaders need to start prioritizing processes so they won’t burn out their Salesforce and technology teams. This includes forming governance teams and structures, communicating the organizational value, and clearly stating expectations for team lead participation in the product cycle. From definition to testing, these user teams have to be involved. Running your performance reports and team reviews through your systems is one way to help push this forward. 🔸 At a higher level, we have to figure out how to define our success at the outcome level and build systems and processes to achieve a high outcome profit margin, not to fulfill some funders' "efficiency" calculation around keeping admin costs below 15%. What a thrill to co-facilitate the Keynote Conversation at SHARE Charlotte’s inaugural (and sold out!) Corporate Volunteer Summit. We packed data, trends, examples, and personal insights into our session. And had so many thoughtful questions from the 200+ corporate and nonprofit leaders who fully embraced the discussion. The thought leadership (and engagement!) was impressive, informative, and inspiring. A few takeaways: 💭 Strive to create strong partnerships, less transaction more transformation 💭 Connect over convince (my personal favorite) 💭 Lean into your area of expertise, nonprofits have so much to offer corporate (think DEIB) 💭 Spotlight impact stats and personal experiences in storytelling 💭 Have the difficult conversations, stronger partnerships will develop out of them 💭 Build programming WITH your community, not just FOR them 💭 Not a one size fits all: be creative and develop what is best for your unique partnership Excited to continue the conversation with SHARE Charlotte (an Aprio Foundation grantee!), Melissa Hovey, Amanda Wise, April Barnhardt Whitlock and so many wonderful corporate and nonprofit leaders! This week, as we celebrate the Community Manager Appreciation Day, let's raise a virtual toast to the heroes who build bridges, spark engagement, dedicate their time to give significant support, and keep our communities thriving. I would love to especially dedicate this year's Appreciation Day to community leaders who are navigating their communities through crisis and wartime. They are the ones who turn turmoil into resilience, fostering hope where it seems impossible. Their communities have become an example of supporting members during their toughest times. They serve as a safe space for finding solutions to challenges, organizing volunteering initiatives, creating projects from scratch, and giving hope in times when it seems that hope cannot exist. If you are one of these community leaders, I want to thank you personally. Since I've been experiencing it myself in the past three months, I know how running a community through my worst-ever crisis while it's still ongoing is an unexpected challenge. I want to remind you that your community doesn't exist in isolation. Through your efforts to foster a space of mutual support, empathy, collaboration, and problem-solving, you contribute positivity to both your community and your community members' surroundings, building collective sturdiness. That's why you should take pride in your accomplishments; they are not merely obvious, but profoundly powerful. Kudos to all the community leaders here!
