Tis the season for sweet potato pies and candied yams! Which brings to mind an interesting way to look at two concepts we frequently discuss in the corporate world: Diversity and Inclusion. Let's think of them in terms of yams and sweet potatoes. Yes, you heard right! Yams and sweet potatoes are often mistaken for one another but are, in fact, quite different. This is much like the relationship between diversity and inclusion in our workplaces. 🔹 Diversity is Like Yams - Diverse in form, size, and color, yams represent the rich variety of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives in our workforce. Diversity is about acknowledging and valuing these differences. 🔹 Inclusion is Like Sweet Potatoes - Sweet potatoes, though similar in appearance to yams, are known for their unique ability to blend into various cuisines. Inclusion is about integrating this diversity into our corporate culture so that every voice is heard and valued. Love these posts from the Ginsberg's Foods team. Great job of establishing the brand of a company by featuring the people who make the company what it is. How is Ginsberg's, a regional food distributor, going to stand out when so many products are commoditized? They showcase their people. I want to open a restaurant just to buy from this guy, and from the team that he considers family. Branding isn't just marketing to potential customers. It is also attracting additional employees and making the enterprise/company/brand more attractive to other companies as partners. This was, hands-down, my favorite project to date. I loved being able to combine my current work as a #diversityequityinclusion organizational psychologist with my 12+ years of experience working in bars and restaurants. Icing on the cake is that this work is happening in Pittsburgh, where I was raised and my current home. Yinzers leading the way! I'm excited to start seeing the data-based* Code of Conduct we built hanging in breweries across the Burgh. And more importantly, seeing and experiencing how our local brewery scene will become more and more inclusive of ALL (even non-alcoholic folx** like me) as a result. I'm so grateful for the work I get to do. Thanks for all those out there who've supported me and Mattingly Solutions over the years, and continue to do so. *The very first step of this project was surveying all Pgh-based brewery employees about what THEY need to create more inclusive workplace cultures...and what gets in the way. We then used that data to build the Code and the corresponding training. That's why it turned out so well. The problems and solutions came directly from those in the trenches. Thank you to anyone who took the time to complete the survey--it made a huge difference. **Shoutout to Two Frays Brewery for leading the way, brewing very tasty NA beers here in the Burgh. And thanks Trace Brewing for putting those NA brews on tap. Hoping more and more breweries in the Burgh follow suit (might Necromancer Brewing be next?). 💫 Yesterday, I attended my first team outing with Eagle Family Foods at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium followed by Windows by the River. During the outing we had great #teambuilders where we were able to #interact with different coworkers outside of our departments. This allowed us to meet new people, foster #teamspirit, and create lasting bonds. 🐡🐠As we walked through the aquarium, we learned more about each other and grew closer as a team as we searched for our scavenger hunt items. The #experience and laughter shared through this made us #stronger as a #team.🦈🪼 🍴During the dinner, we were able to #connect and uncover each of our #passions for Eagle Family Foods. Our CEO’s speech was #empowering to hear as he emphasized #growth, great work #culture, and a #positive outlook of the things that are to come for our brands. Chipotle: Webster Tx. Have you ever wondered if the employees featured in TV commercials are actual employees or perhaps actors? Me too. Today, at one of my favorite place for lunch, I met Christina - the manager and actual Chipotle employee who's featured in a recent commercial. In our brief conversation, I mentioned how awesome it must be the face of a franchise and asked if this was something she applied for, volunteered to, or was asked to do?! She said her boss helped push her name through the process, but wasn't sure she'd get the opportunity because of - in her own words, an occasional stutter. As an affirmation, I said the commercial was spot on and she was great! I even doubled down by sharing that some of the most influential people we know - had an occasional stutter. ... the likes of Ed Sheeran to Elvis, Kendrick Lamar to the voice of the The Lion King, even in biblical terms for Moses who went to the Pharaoh. What a nice reminder of a modern miracle, in my opinion. - Disfluencies won't keep us from being an influence. - Opportunities are abound. - The value of seeing greatness in others, and to help see them through.
