Over the long weekend I got into a debate with a friend about what it takes to build a top rated product team. Clearly it's not just about assembling a group of all-stars; it's about creating a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
So I searched to find sone useful examples from successful companies. Here is what I found.
1. Set clear goals and expectations: Make sure everyone knows what success looks like and how their work contributes to the bigger picture. At Google, OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) keep teams aligned and focused on what matters most.
2. Foster cross-functional collaboration: Break down silos and encourage teamwork between product, design, engineering, and other departments. Spotify's squad model is a great example of how autonomous, cross-functional teams can drive innovation.
3. Embrace experimentation and learning: Create a safe space for trying new ideas, learning from failures, and iterating quickly. Amazon's "two-pizza teams" are empowered to experiment and make decisions rapidly.
4. Measure and celebrate success: Define key metrics and celebrate wins along the way. Airbnb's "Night At The Museum" events recognize team achievements and reinforce their mission.
5. Invest in growth and development: Provide opportunities for learning, mentorship, and career growth. Microsoft's 70-20-10 model emphasizes on-the-job learning, coaching, and formal training.
Fun fact: High-performing teams are 21% more profitable and 17% more productive than their peers, according to Gallup.
I'm always looking for new ways to level up my team. What strategies have worked well for you? Let me know in the comments!
