According to a Bankrate.com report, nearly 2 in 5 U.S. adults (39%) have a side hustle, and 44% believe they will always need one to maintain their lifestyle. A few months ago, I posted a video on Instagram. It was about personal finance lessons I wish I knew before coming to Canada. Almost 400,000 people watched that video on IG and TikTok, many even saved and shared it (over 2,000 on Instagram alone). Many of our campaigns do numbers like this. Especially those that focus on helping, not selling. Even though I still asked them to create an account with a financial service (and they did,) my goal was to solve a problem, not just sell the product. When you prioritize solving your customer’s problems, you achieve a powerful win-win. You build trust and you also sell. This is the same way I approach growth for startups building for immigrants in Canada. Prioritizing customer needs isn’t just the right thing to do - it’s a smart business strategy.

In meeting with different entrepreneurs I have been amazed at what people do to earn a living. The ideas that people have on how to make money just amazes me. For me, it just reminds me not to get stuck in my limited thinking as to what you can do with your life. I grew up in a lower/middle class family for US standards. The "dream" was to get out of a small town, get a job with a stable company and get that ever secure salary. After all, even if you dislike your job at least you have a safe and steady income. That his limited me a lot in what I thought I would be able to achieve in my life - causing me to not take risks and try new things. I have learned, as Walt has said, if you can dream it, you can do it. Sure, not every idea is going to make you a million dollars, but you also do not need a million dollars to be happy. The best examples in this area I think of are shows on YouTube right now that show children playing with toys. In my mind, I just think who in the world would want to watch another child play with toys - I would rather play with those toys myself than watch someone else. But....children L-O-V-E it and these channels have done so well. What is a dream you have or will chase?

Self-employment is changing. The rise of the side hustle in recent years has changed the face of self-employment in the UK. Along with traditional freelancers and contractors, more people are turning their hand to self-employment part-time to boost their income. As you can imagine, HMRC is well aware of this shift in ways of working – keen to ensure this new wave of self-employed workers pay the right amount of tax. And in recent months, it’s been reported that a new ‘side hustle tax’ has been rolled out, but this isn't the case. HMRC has simply broadened its scope – and will start gathering the income data of those who sell their services on the likes of Airbnb, Vinted and so on. All it means is that those with side hustles must ensure their tax compliance, given HMRC will have access to how much has been earned via digital platforms.
