Can Time & Motion Studies Keep Your Housekeeping Heroes Safe? Hotel housekeepers are the backbone of the industry, but their jobs often come at a high cost – their well-being. ▶ A recent study published in the American Journal of Medicine revealed that housekeepers are among the top 10 occupations most prone to workplace injuries. ▶ Housekeepers rank among the top 10 of nearly 800 occupations tracked by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics for injuries and illnesses resulting in days away from work, restricted duties, or job transfers. Why? The daily tasks, like lifting heavy objects, bending awkwardly, and repetitive motions, put them at risk for musculoskeletal injuries. This is where 'Time and Motion studies' can help. Traditionally utilized to optimize process efficiency, these studies can also pinpoint activities or movements that contribute to injuries. I get it. In #hospitality, budgets are tight, leadership is working to keep expenditures down, and adding new brand new solution - like a motorized #housekeeping cart may seem like a "nice, but maybe later" type item for your hotel/resort. However, Rubbermaid did not just release a new, easy-to-use Motorized Housekeeping Cart Kit without considering all that. We brought it to market understanding the *gravity* of all the current challenges and because this solution could seriously be a big help/solution to those challenges. Why the time is now: 1. 💪 The need to support your housekeepers with more ergonomical options has never been greater. The extra-heavy carts your housekeeping staff strains to repetitively push on a daily basis are leading to increased workplace injuries, many caused in part by that level of repetition. 2. ⏱ Aside from the risk caused by the repetitive pushing, the need to think about time savings is real. How many minutes a year is your team spending on the ultra-slow pushing of the sometimes ~100 lb carts (when fully loaded) ? In many cases, the pushing is made even harder by the plush carpets the carts are being pushed over. 3. ✅ Think about staffing challenges. Are you having issues staffing your housekeeping team? Is your hotel the one housekeepers WANT to work at? Could easier to push carts increase job satisfaction of your teams? 4. ⚡ In many cases this is a simple retrofit! Our team can visit you and assess if your current Rubbermaid carts can be retrofit. We have some important data we are ready to share with you- either in person or via Teams meeting. Please reach out to me or your local Rubbermaid rep to schedule a meeting today. In the grand theater of the hospitality industry, housekeepers play an unsung yet pivotal role, ensuring guests have a comfortable and pleasant stay. However, their journey is laden with numerous challenges, some of which seldom come to light. In this article, we explore the various hurdles housekeepers encounter and the ways to ameliorate these challenges. — Sustaining Physical Wellbeing Housekeeping is a physically demanding job, requiring staff to be on their feet for extended periods. The continual bending, lifting, and cleaning can lead to musculoskeletal disorders. The industry is thus urged to foster ergonomically friendly environments, enabling housekeepers to maintain their health. — Stress and Burnout The relentless pace of work coupled with stringent standards often fosters a high-stress environment, leading to burnout. Addressing this necessitates a nurturing work atmosphere that recognizes and appreciates the hard work of the housekeeping staff, providing them with adequate breaks and mental health support. — Skill Development and Career Growth While many enter the industry with dreams of growth, the lack of structured paths for skill development can stagnate career progression. Establishing clear pathways for skill enhancement and promotion can significantly benefit housekeepers, allowing them to aspire and achieve greater heights. — Health and Safety Concerns From handling hazardous chemicals to navigating wet floors, housekeepers face a myriad of safety issues daily. It is imperative for the industry to prioritize safety training and ensure the ready availability of safety gear to protect the backbone of the hospitality industry - its housekeeping staff. — Conclusion As we unravel the challenges faced by housekeepers, it is evident that a thoughtful approach can significantly enhance their working conditions, ultimately uplifting the hospitality industry's service quality. The road to achieving a symbiotic relationship between housekeepers and the hospitality sector lies in understanding and mitigating these challenges effectively. #HospitalityIndustry #HousekeepingChallenges #WorkplaceWellbeing #CareerGrowth #HealthAndSafety #HospitalityInsights
