A question we are often asked is: "Which framework should I choose to develop an accessible app?" It's important to consider accessibility when developing an app. Over 1 billion people in the world have a disability. And 50% of all people use accessibility features on their mobile devices. In this article, we are comparing the pros and cons of Android, iOS, Flutter, React Native and Xamarin. We have also added Web equivalents for convenience. A conclusion is drawn at the end. The following functions are covered: 1. Orientation 2. Text scaling 3. Contrast 4. Name 5. Role 6. Value 7. State 8. Focus order 9. Focus change 10. SwiftUI has improved accessibility by handling most of the work through its declarative programming model, even posting accessibility notifications as it's state-driven. In my latest article, I've shared some tips to further enhance SwiftUI apps, ensuring they are Understandable, Interactable, and Navigable for accessibility users. If your users must visually interact with the screen to complete an action and voiceover alone isn't adequate, then there's room for improvement in your app. Let's make our apps accessible to everyone! Don't use React Native, Flutter, or Xamarin unless you want to deal with Accessibility bugs. Write once, publish anywhere mobile frameworks will always be worse for users than 2 separate iOS and Android code bases. If you want a write once, publish anywhere solution that is actually accessible then stick with HTML.

Jan Jaap de Groot writes great stuff! IMO: Learning to do pure Compose and SwiftUI applications is the only way to build a truly accessible application. AI is a huge reason behind the shift to declarative user interface languages and people with disabilities stand to benefit the most from proper use of platform AI resources. Utilizing the platforms declarative language ensures your users get the most benefit out of ecosystems evolving towards developer convenience of AI Integration.
