Aww, my latest piece for POLITICO is published 🗞 The real story on Europe’s transgender debate: Republicans are pointing to an unlikely authority in moving to ban or restrict gender-affirming care for minors: European governments. While many U.S. medical organizations support gender-affirming care that can include puberty-blocking drugs, hormone treatments and surgery, GOP lawmakers argue progressive Europe is leading the way in limiting or barring access to care. But a POLITICO review of the state of care for transgender people in Europe found more nuance than Republican critics often portray.

Transgender Awareness Week is an important time to reflect on the healthcare needs and rights of transgender individuals. This is a week dedicated to both raising awareness about the challenges and discrimination that many transgender people face as well as celebrating the transgender individuals that make our community more vibrant and diverse. As we strive for a more inclusive and equitable society, it's crucial that we focus on improving transgender access to healthcare and the affordability of that care. Here at AccessOne, we focus on easing the stress and burden of medical bills, including helping transgender individuals afford their Gender-Affirming Care. These treatments are medically necessary for many transgender people, and barriers to access can have significant negative effects on their well-being. Much of this care is still not covered by insurance and can cost upwards of $100,000 or more. "We have suicide attempt rates of 40 percent among transgender people where there are no medical interventions offered, and so we know that’s a failed strategy,” says Joshua Safer, MD, Executive Director, Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai Health System.

Transgender non-binary embodiment and bodily discomfort are primarily discussed from a medical perspective. However, they can also be read as the social body reaching out through the discomfort of a socialised body. New #OnlineFirst research from sociologist Nina Perger (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia) draws on qualitative data on the everyday lives of non-binary individuals and uses a Bourdieusian framework to analyse the phenomenon of transgender bodily discomfort or bodily dysphoria. https://buff.ly/3OVycwm

There is so much misinformation out there about transgender health care, especially when it comes to younger trans people. So, for those who still need to learn about these issues, those with questions, and those who might benefit from having more information to share with your circles, here are the American Psychological Association's position as of February 2024. Transgender people, and gender-expansive people of all ages deserve access to the best healthcare provided by culturally competent practitioners. As a cisgender man, I receive great gender-affirming care from a cisgender medical professional who understands me and my needs. What? I receive gender-affirming care? Well, YEAH! I am a cisgender Latino gay man with Arab descend of a "certain age." There are specific care that is recommended for me, such as regular prostrate cancer screening, sexually transmitted diseases screening and treatment, mental health challenges unique to survivors of "conversion therapy", and propensity to develop certain cancers due to North African Arab ancestry. So, yeah, I receive medical and mental health care that is specific to my identity as a cisgender Latino gay man. Why wouldn't I fight to have the same quality of health care access for my trans and gender expansive siblings? #trans #transhealth #transgender #medicalcare #genderaffirmingcare https://lnkd.in/gsK8_X6A

Rev. 289🔹 In this Note, this Author explores the conflict between two different American traditions as applied to States’ efforts to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth, concludes these bans are unconstitutional, and highlights the need for heightened scrutiny of laws that override the joint medical decision-making of parents, children, and their physicians.
