First meetup in my home state, don't leave me hanging DSM! If you're new here, I host meetup events whenever I travel to bring my LinkedIn connections to life. I open up my network so others can expand theirs. It's a low-key opportunity to meet professionals from a variety of industries. We meet, chat, network, and avoid awkward conversations. Since I'm bringing relative strangers together I prepare a list of back-up discussion topics*, here they are: Iowa weather, LinkedIn, Caitlin Clark, ground temperatures (ANF- IYKYK), Simpson vs. Central rivalry, family/pets, favorite pens, dream vacation spot, nerdy hobbies. Ground Rules: Come as you are, no name tags. No sales pitches. Here are the event details: Happy Hour: March 11 @ Range Restaurant + Cocktail Bar, 5:00-6:30pm Coffee Chat: March 12 @ Smokey Row (Des Moines), 8:00-9:30am Tagging a few people that I would love to connect with while I'm in town: Trevor M., Dave Won, Michael Novotny, Nathan Seberg, Beth Shelton, MBA (she/her), Tiffany N. Berkenes, Bernie E. Stone MA, MBA, Anna Nalean, Bobby Nalean, Nate Boulton, Brian Steffen & Sharon Steffen, Daniel Carver, Nate Nims, and Erin Disney. *We have yet to refer to the list of discussion topics, the conversation always seems to develop organically.*

Forget the screen. Real connections are made with a handshake and a smile. Why? Because the digital age has forgotten the art of true connection. In a sea of digital interactions, a personal touch stands out. It's not just about who you know, but how you know them. Face-to-face beats pixel-to-pixel, every time. What can we actually do about it? Well, effective options are: 1. Attend local meetups. 2. Prioritize coffee meetings. 3. Remember names and stories. The strongest network isn’t built online. It’s the result of real-world interactions, remembered faces, and shared experiences. Who will you meet in person this week? Commit below.

this is 💯 percent the most hardcore thing I've ever witnessed in tech. 1. Maya goes freelance. 2. Thinks "I should do some marketing." 3. 𝗟𝗔𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦 𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗢𝗪𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 (Maya will correct me if I've missed crucial steps there 😆.) But it looks epic. Given this is her lineup, picture who else will be there. Picture yourself there. And when you pay for a normal price ticket, you aren't supporting someone with venture funding. You're supporting this brilliant mind. #b2bmarketing #contentmarketing #SF
If you've been following the 🌹 Beloved Tech Brands (BTB) Conf 🌹 updates, you'll know that we're putting on an incredible event in San Francisco on May 15th: equal parts marketing masterclass, community gathering, and unprecedented access to the expert speakers and each other through carefully curated breakouts, coordinated meetings, and lots of moments to break bread together. As exciting as the warm reception has been, I have to ask you to commit up front, ideally now. 🎟 Over the past 6 years my teams have thrown 6 different user conferences, and each time, we're wringing our hands throughout the planning because attendees tend to love to wait until the final two weeks to register and pay for tickets. But...I'm signing contracts, bills, and invoices now. And that's me, not any corporate interest behind me with a tidy P&L. So I need your help, and I'm going to sweeten the deal for you. Buy tickets this week, use code 'MSFREN' and get 15% off. The tickets will never be less expensive than this, and I'm going to mess around and reduce the discount next week, to gamify this experience a bit. Some folks will always wait until the last two weeks, but for those of you who can move now and capitalize on discounted tickets-- please do! Can't wait to see you on May 15th! Tickets at btbconf (dotcom!) More announcements this week to come, including the VENUE!! 🏛

#1 biggest mistake events are making: (and what to do instead) Make attendees endure a marathon of registration Q's. Unless you are intent on turning them away! Optimize registration with these 3 steps: 1. Simplify: Only ask for essential information. Name, email, few specifics, payment. Streamline sign-up. Boost completion rates. 2. Use smart tech: Select an intuitive registration system. Automate additional questions post-registration. Show attendees personalized value for answering. 3. Personalize the Experience: Immediately tailor the attendee journey. Recommend sessions, link people, modify schedules. Make each participant feel unique. Enhance engagement. Minimize hassle. Boost conversion, community, enjoyment. Easy does it! P.S. Longest registration process you have seen? P.P.S. Will be showcasing at Event Tech Live! May 1st and 2nd. Vegas. Reach out if you'll be there!

On Jan 23 I attended a Product Diversity Meet-up organised by Just Eat Takeaway.com in Amsterdam HQ (link at the end). Here's a 2-minute read of the entire evening. The panel consisted of speakers who work on the product in JET: Jessica Hall, Hyesung Lim, Ozlem O, Xander Jennie, and Hassan Charaf. The discussion was about. Well. Diversity. In this case, about the diversity of forms a product management (PM) may take. My takeaways from the meeting: On developing a skillset A wide expertise is what makes a great PM. In the case of panel speakers, the usual combination is business + something: marketing, technical expertise, or domain knowledge. The idea of T-shaped expertise is not new. For the job of PM, it feels like a wider skillset is more beneficial than a deeper skillset. To me, it makes sense, because if your final goal is to ship the product, you need to coordinate the different parts of the team. It will be easier if you’re able to speak the language of every role involved. This discussion also reminded me of the post by Ian McCallister on Top-1% PM vs Top-10% PM: https://lnkd.in/eQxjm4es On landing your first PM job Expand your network and utilize your domain expertise. For example, Xander Jennie became a junior PM in JET by doing just that. He started at JET as a courier and moved up to Operations Specialist. This gave him two things: an ability to connect with people via a corporate network, and a deep understanding of JET operations. The former helped Xander to get noticed in the company, and the latter gave him valuable insights about how JET works in the real world which made him an irreplaceable part of the product team. To develop domain knowledge the advice is simple: “[F]ollow your curiosity and talk to people about what you’re passionate about” by Jessica Hall To expand your network, I find this post by Dylan de Heer useful: https://lnkd.in/ey4hEpKu Links The meeting I am talking about: https://lnkd.in/earHPw-i Meet Up group of Just Eat Takeaway.com: https://lnkd.in/eU-sezpu P.S. I’m looking for a job as UX Researcher or Data Analyst. I design. I research. I write code. Check out my CV: https://lnkd.in/em899HB5
