Recently, we asked another intelligent entity to submit an editorial about the potential advantages of A.I.The following editorial represents the opinions of the author alone, and GAEL is publishing the article not as an endorsement, but for your critical inquiry and discussion. What will you do with Artificial Intelligence? Ban it? Post guardrails? Totally embrace it?

How should educators deal with the rise of Gen AI? We're dealing with the calculator moment! Yesterday I had the pleasure to be on a panel with Gerrit Jessen, CMP CMM CED, Kristin Malek, Dahlia El Gazzar & Ramon Özer, at the IMEX Faculty Program. It was refreshing and inspiring seeing how faculty members from universities around the world, recognising the impact of GenAI, are taking proactive steps to rethink their approach. It was great hearing student's perspectives as well - thanks Abby Cantrell! How do we harness the potential of tools like ChatGPT & Spark, while ensuring academic integrity and fostering critical thinking skills? A really good resource that was shared was the guidelines published by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to help faculty develop course policies around AI. Some key takeaways: - Have a Clear Policy: Include AI guidelines directly in your syllabus. - Set Specific Limits: Outline allowed/disallowed AI uses for different assignments. - Communicate the 'Why': Explain the educational reasoning behind your policy. This Substack post carefully dissects not just Khanmigo's teaching moves (spoiler: looks good, actually not quite) but the teaching move that actually works: making sure working memory consolidates properly into long-term memory before building new concepts on top. Thing is this ONLY works if educators can game out their students' learning journeys over years, not just months (or weeks), and have the space and strength to hold and encourage students in the formative strain of grappling with new concepts. Can AI do that? Someday it will. But it's not being trained to (and it's hard to grasp optimising an AI for the awkward pause). More importantly, I genuinely don't think there is a technological substitute for love. I'm convinced that whenever my students have really learned in my classes (very rarely, I'm sure!), they've held that formative strain (of consolidating new concepts) knowing that I am *there* for them, that I care that they learn the stuff, that I will give my time and effort until they do. But waiting for the right answer doesn't cost an AI anything the way it costs a human teacher. Will students still accept a pedagogical offering if it has cost no-one anything? Some thoughts on AIED research & development: The skills to creatively leverage relevant learning sciences into AIED product designs, so that engineers and product managers can understand. Sounds like a simple process, but the the hardest part is the depth of knowledge needed when it comes to the understanding learning sciences and pinpointing what is relevant when it comes to an AIED product, creative thinking and design skills to connect learning science with AI technology effectively, the ability to work cross domains & skills to transform ideas into product designs, the right strategies to connect multipile teams together to drive one goal! This is really an urgently needed skill sets when it comes to building a good AIED product that potentially would have huge impacts (e.g. modifying thought processes and learning behavior of our next generation)! With the rising quantity of AI products, I think in the coming 5-10 years, companies that eventually survived and thrived in the market, must have done this properly! AI is having a strong impact in our lifes and societies, which include animals. We, who are interested in animal rights, cannot ignore AI development and regulations intended to prevent harms to humans and the environment. Animals are being ignored so far in regulations and guidelines but understanding them is a key starting point.
