Feeling overwhelmed when confronted with a problem? Here's a simple yet powerful technique to sharpen your problem-spotting skills: "How Might We" (HMW). Here's a simple breakdown: ✅ Identify the Problem: Start by clearly defining the issue you're facing, whether at work, in your personal life, or on a project. ✅ Ask HMW Questions: Transform the problem into #HowMightWe questions to focus on solutions. This encourages creative thinking and prevents premature conclusions. For example, if it's low employee engagement in meetings, ask: "How might we make our meetings more engaging and productive?" ✅ Prioritize Opportunities: Review your HMW questions, group them, and prioritize based on impact and alignment with your goals. The HMW technique trains your brain to approach problems with a solution-oriented mindset, revealing hidden opportunities and fostering innovation. Next time you face a problem, ask yourself: "How might we turn this challenge into an opportunity?" As a founder, I often ask myself this simple question: “Knowing everything I know about this person, would I choose to work with them again?” There are three possible responses: ✅ A strong “YES!” - Do whatever you can to motivate, encourage and retain this person. - Set up a one-on-one meeting cadence to keep up the alignment. ❓❓❓“I am not sure” - Dig deeper to find the source of your uncertainty - Build a plan to shore up this person. - Have a honest, in-depth conversation: I enjoy working with you for these reasons, but I feel here is where we can get even better… - Set up a one-on-one meeting cadence with clear action points with measurable outcomes. - As yourself this question again in three months. ❎ “No!!!!” - Trust your gut. - List out why you feel this way. - Have that hard conversation: It has been x months since we have worked together. There are some areas where I feel it is not working out. Let us figure out a way ahead… - Based on your HR policies - it could mean a performance improvement plan, reassignment to a different team or moving the person on. - Do not delay the next steps here - left unchecked, things usually get worse. I read about this framework in Ben Horowitz’s seminal book “The Hard Thing About Hard Things” many, many years ago and it simplified so much for me. What are your go-to frameworks?
