Mental Health - Sad Facts Facts and statistics: ·        Over 700,000 people take their own life each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds (WHO) ·        115 people die by suicide in the UK every week – with 75% of those deaths being male (ONS) ·        Males aged 45-49  have the highest suicide rate (Samaritans) ·        10% of young people self-harm (Mental Health Foundation) Over the course of one’s lifetime: ·        1 in 5 people have suicidal thoughts (NHS Digital) ·        1 in 14 people self-harm (NHS Digital) ·        1 in 15 people attempt suicide (NHS Digital) Fundraising: So, with that Edward Saldanha and I have chosen #ANDYSMANCLUB as a charity we would like to raise some cash for. May is mental health month. I've been passionate about this subject as it has impacted my life as I have worked through many personal struggles. I know how important it is to have someone to be able to talk about the things in your life that are difficult. Unfortunately many do not have access to mental health services. In the Colorado, mental health is a serious issue for youth particularly with suicide. Suicide is the leading cause of death for youth in Colorado. Recent data indicates that within one school year, 1 in 5 Colorado high school students (17%) reported seriously considering suicide. It is an unfortunate reality that access to quality mental health care is limited. More so than ever before, it has become increasingly difficult to navigate mental healthcare and prohibitively expensive to afford therapy. Second Wind Fund (SWF) is a Colorado non-profit that provided up to 12 FREE counseling sessions for youth (19 and younger). As little as 1 session has proved to help reduce suicide significantly. It's great that we talk about mental health, but let's put our money where our mouths are. The Big Give Christmas Challenge goes live in one week. From 12pm on 28 November until 12pm on 5 December, every penny you give through the Big Give website will be doubled. I run a non-profit called the Half a Sorrow Foundation. We get our name from the old proverb that goes like this: A shared joy is a double joy; a shared sorrow is half a sorrow. ------ Our mission is to improve mental health for individuals and organizations by promoting real conversations. We focus on suicide prevention, but the real target is the stigma that surrounds mental health. Stigma goes away, and we share more of our sorrows.
