We're out this morning with our latest education poll for The Education Trust and the Barr Foundation, asking 6-12 parents about their kids post-school plans. The poll revealed significant gaps in parental knowledge of appropriate information, resources, and supports needed to help their child make informed decisions about what comes after high school, especially among Latino and low-income parents. https://lnkd.in/en_CBNF2

The National League of Cities (NLC) recently featured Mayor Ras J. Baraka of Newark, NJ, in their On Your Mind series spotlighting local leaders and early childhood champions. The article highlights impactful initiatives in Newark such as the Summer Youth Improvement Program and My Brother’s Keeper, both dedicated to boosting literacy and academic readiness for the city's children. Additionally, Newark’s Citywide Prenatal to 3rd Grade 10-point Plan is making strides to improve literacy rates. Baraka had this to say the Prenatal to 3rd Grade plan: "The idea that kids have to start school ready to learn drove this direction. If you are trying to get kids to be prepared to learn before they enter school, then you have to support them while they’re out of school, which is when they’re first born or, even before that, when they are in their mother’s womb, forming. We have to figure out how to get kids prepared, and the data and science are showing us that it’s possible to do that — to engage in literacy with your child before they are born." We applaud Mayor Baraka’s commitment to ensuring the future success of Newark’s youth through these essential literacy programs! This is despite the fact that most states require schools to find and serve gifted children. It's time we tap into this untapped potential nationwide. Let's work together to identify and serve these bright young minds. #GiftedEducation #EducationReform #UntappedPotential

Advocate for Adult Learning and Workforce Development | Building Strong Educational Programs and Community Partnerships
A mother's reading skill is the foremost predictor of her children's academic success, eclipsing factors like neighborhood and family income. This underscores a powerful truth: supporting adult education, especially for mothers, echoes far beyond individual achievement—it's an investment in the fabric of our families and the scaffolding of our society. 👩👧👦 Family Impact: Enhancing literacy in adults, particularly mothers (or primary caregivers), sets a trajectory for children’s educational paths, instilling early literacy and a passion for learning. 🌈 Societal Benefits: Educated parents pave the way for brighter futures, breaking cycles of poverty and fostering a culture of learning that benefits entire communities. This Advocacy April, let's amplify our support for adult learners. Elevating adult education strengthens families, enriches communities, and lays the groundwork for our collective future. #AdvocacyApril #AdultEducation #FamilyLiteracy Coalition on Adult Basic Education Erin Vobornik

Family literacy and numeracy practices are paramount when predicting a child's success in school. Caretakers in the home have the ability to model life-changing literacy and numeracy practices in their day-to-day interactions with the children they care for. Estimating how many jumps it will take to get to the end of the driveway or reading street signs out loud with your child can help them develop applied literacy and numeracy practices in their everyday lives. Every parent and every caretaker has the ability to create patterns of resilience, persistence and problem-solving skills when they read with and engage in math skills with their child. These skills are not only important for school, but they are important for navigating adulthood as well! #AdultEducation works to help parents and caretakers recover the skills that they missed to help spark success in the generations after them. Adult education is an investment in our nation's future as it nurtures the family literacy and numeracy practices that predict future child success. #AdultEducationMatters #Investment #AdvocacyApril Sharon Bonney
