As you work to improve student success, consider this tool that Strong Start to Finish developed in collaboration with Education Commission of the States. It guides institutions, systems, and states to consider the different policy changes needed to increase student success in the first year of college and beyond. What a pleasure has been to collaborate with Sharmila Basu Mann on this resource! #highered #highereducation #studentsuccess
Developmental education reforms such as multiple measures for placement, co-requisites, and math pathways are proven strategies to increase student success in postsecondary education. However, there is still much to be done to codify these efforts in policy. Policy is key for scale-up and sustainability. Strong Start to Finish is proud to offer a framework that summarizes all the policy areas that make up for comprehensive developmental education reform, and provides examples of current legislation and system-level policy. #highered #highereducation #studentsuccess Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gcXEZFMZ

After three years of steep declines, postsecondary enrollment in Washington is showing signs of recovery. According to data shared with Washington Roundtable by the state’s public postsecondary institutions, 51,000+ fewer students enrolled in our public institutions in fall 2023 than in fall 2019 – representing a 17% enrollment decline since the pandemic’s onset. This comes at a time when postsecondary education is increasingly the only pathway to middle-class jobs. According to a recent report from Georgetown, 72% of jobs in our state will require postsecondary education by 2031. There are glimmers of hope in the updated data. Enrollment at Washington’s 34 Community and Technical Colleges is up nearly 13,000 students year-over-year. First-year student enrollment at the four-year institutions is up 3% since fall 2022. And Black student enrollment has increased. Additionally, recent state policy changes will smooth the path for many students. But Washington struggled with a postsecondary enrollment crisis before the pandemic, and we still have a long way to go just to get back to pre-pandemic enrollment. Bold action is needed. #ThrowbackThursday: This Thursday, we’re revisiting a blog titled “FSU’s CARE Program Combat First-Generation Student Dropout Rates” by Shayna Cohen. This blog was originally published on November 20th, 2019. This blog from 2019 focuses on FSU's CARE Program. Implemented in 2000, the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement addresses low retention and high drop-out rates among economically or educationally disadvantaged students. Statistically, lower-income students are more likely to drop out of college. Additionally, students who graduate college are more likely to earn more during their lifetime than their peers who only graduated high school. The CARE program assists students in demonstrating resilience through continuing their college education as well as overcoming disadvantaged personal situations. The program has combatted these statistics by investing in campus spaces, organizations, and programs that benefit students in their academic and personal lives alike.
