This holiday season, "Give the Gift of Mentorship" to first-generation college students in Chicago. At iMentor, we believe 1:1 mentorship for first-generation students on Chicago’s South and West Sides increases the chance for them to enroll, persist, and graduate from #college. A college degree is the most direct path to economic mobility – a four-year college graduate earns $1M more over their lifetime than someone who doesn’t go to college, making a bachelor’s degree worth 84% more than a high school diploma. For most students applying to college, they turn to individuals in their network, or their family’s network, for support and guidance, but for first-generation college students, social networks and professional resources that specifically open access to higher educational pathways are limited. Your #GivingTuesday2023 donation at any level supports the next generation of leaders for Chicago. Please consider a monthly or a one-time donation in support of iMentor Chicago. Whatever you can give will make an incredible difference! https://bit.ly/3SPjQQJ

According to a new report from Complete College America, a nonprofit whose goal it is to raise postsecondary attainment, states with college completion goals should adopt funding practices that give colleges and universities enough money upfront to meet those targets. The organization described this approach as “completion-goals funding,” which would link government money to the “actual cost of educating enough students to reach statewide completion goals.” Charles Ansell, Complete College America's vice president of research, policy and advocacy, suggested that outcomes-based funding can preserve inequities between public colleges. “If you are perpetuating an inequitable funding base to begin with, then what will happen is certain colleges that have more resources will be more adept at being able to meet the new student success targets that are being set forth, versus other colleges that may already be strapped for resources,” he said.
States should overhaul how they give colleges money, report says

Another great piece from Vu Le My favorite: 13. Nonprofit math is a funder or donor refusing to pay for overhead, yet still requires reporting on how the money was spent. Which is accounting. Which is overhead! A close runner up: 7. Nonprofit math is when nonprofits are expected to spend $2,000’s worth of staff time in grant writing and reporting for a $1,000 grant Regarding # 7, I would say that nonprofits need to be thoughtful about going after grants. Sometimes the juice is not worth the squeeze. #nonprofitmanagement #outsourcedaccounting #interimcfo #grantwriting

Did you hear? Ithaka S+R is launching a new, public, nonprofit, national credit mobility website. This universal credit transfer explorer will go live later this year with data from an inaugural set of institutions across three states, thanks to collaborations with the Connecticut State Colleges & Universities, the SC Commission on Higher Education, and the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC).
