The MKE-West Servant Leadership Roundtable met on the First Thursday of April to discuss how ‘leadership’ has changed in the last ten years and how that may be reflected in the practice of Servant Leadership. As usual, the conversation was engaging and interesting. Consider joining us on May 2. The group felt that ‘leadership’ had not changed what was required of them; however, people had changed. Briefly, people need to understand a leader's intentions more than in the past – much more transparency is required. How we work with conflict was also discussed. As leaders, authentic conversation is needed to work through conflict – not edicts or power-based communication. Our one-hour conversation went by quickly – a few of the takeaways were: · The work of a servant leader is facilitating good conversation · The leader’s intentions need to be clear · Servant leaders must model servant leadership · An uncomfortable conversation does not mean a lousy conversation · Transparency is more important than ever · People believe what they see and hear in action https://lnkd.in/gmNEfnwS Please join the conversation! #WISL #servantleadership

Wisconsin Servant Leadership Roundtable - Pewaukee We meet on the First Thursday of the month at The Machine Shed. All are welcome. Today, we had a wonderful conversation regarding Servant-Leaders (S-L) and the dilemma of a "Rules-based Approach" or a "Principle-based Approach to leadership. This is based on Trompenaars and Voerman's book, "Servant Leadership across cultures." Chapter Four, "Core Qualities" -- no homework was required; however, some did a little reading. Some discussions centered on "Freedom within Fences," Situational Leadership, Discipline, and Accountability. We also discussed the importance of TRUST and the idea of Awareness and Self-Awareness being a foundation for S-L. We shared experiences and examples as well as asked questions of one another regarding the practice of Servant-Leadership. Many of our exchanges are very practical -- what would YOU do? We all examined the idea that "the servant-leader is extremely good at building a bridge between a rule-based approach (rule and text-driven) and a principle-based (exception and context-driven) approach. We concluded that it was because the S-L considers the needs of those we (serve) lead. We will be back next month and the topic will be "Servant-Leadership and Emotional Intelligence." #servantleadership #WISL https://lnkd.in/gmNEfnwS

The topic for our conversation at the MKE-West Servant-Leadership Roundtable was measuring the effects of Servant Leadership (S-L) on our organizations. Should we measure S-L? How do we measure servant leadership? A couple of participants searched the topic and shared their findings. One of the articles included a survey with questions focused on "my manager," and the other focused on measuring a co-worker's servant-leadership capacity. Our conversation considered the survey instruments, but we preferred discussing what we do as servant-leaders. We shared a solid hour of conversation over breakfast. Near the end of the hour, we ask each participant to share their key takeaway from the Servant Leadership Roundtable. They include: * The importance of sharing "why." * Stressing accountability. * Listening, listening, listening. * The importance of creating meaningful work. * There is a need to create an environment where people feel comfortable. * Ego gets in our way as servant-leaders. * We know we are successful when our S-L approach replicates in our people. * Indirect measurements may be better than survey measurements – such as turnover or tenue. * Servant Leadership is about the success of our people. * There is a big difference between a "boss" approach and a Servant Leader approach. Our topic for April 4th will be "How is leadership today different from a generation ago?" Please join us. #WISL #servantleadership https://lnkd.in/gmNEfnwS
