Women’s month and Science Every year in August, South Africa marks Women’s Month where we pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws towards women. While we acknowledge this, we are in 2023 and are faced with climate change and disasters alongside low research and development challenges in science in Africa. We need to revitalise this energy in the science field for sustainable development. Climate change is not just an environmental issue, but also a social justice and development challenge. Inequalities in power and resources mean that some women in our communities are more vulnerable to impacts of climate change than others. And it is clear that we need to invest in research and development in the Global South, as well as Africa in order to address these inequalities. We need to ensure that everyone has the resources they need to adapt and build resilience. We need a lot of collaborations when it comes to climate change research and development. For example, scientists, women, businesses, and governments can work together to develop and implement sustainable policies and practices. This way, women in our communities working together to build sustainable climate resilience will be able to adapt to the effects of climate change. By this I wish to celebrate women's milestones and their extraordinary roles in all spheres of society. I wish to celebrate all women in South Africa and around the world. UN Summit for the Future Thanks Ambassador Wallace and Ambassador Brandt for the opportunity to contribute to the consultations on the United Nations Intergovernmental Process for the Declaration on Future Generations. Its time to redefine the Future. The Summit for the Future will convene those who believe that a better tomorrow can be attained for the benefit of people and planet. Currently we are faced with dire scenarios which challenge aspirations for a safe and sustainable future. Together, we have a duty to current, and future, generations to raise the ambition and the Declaration and Pact for the Future must serve as a compass to provide orientation and guide these efforts. The Network of Institutions and Leaders for Future Generations (NiFG) is an independent network of national institutions, organisations and leaders seeking better international governance, multi-lateral collaboration and joint-up decision-making to assure the rights, interests and wellbeing of future generations. We are responding to the consultation and call for minds and efforts to be focused on recasting and reframing the way we govern and engage, rather than simply seeking to provide a reflecting platform for the future. We need not only to inspire but define pathways for attaining this fairer, healthier, and more equitable future. Seeing the world through the eyes of future generations can change the way we relate to others, we organise ourselves, make decisions and act. Let’s embed these new frames and insights into intergovernmental governance for a more secure and safe future for all. #FutureGenerations #SummitfortheFuture #Education #NiFG
