Most people don't know it, but even though you can ship wine in nearly every state (47, plus the District of Columbia), it is illegal to ship beer from the brewer directly to a consumer's door in most states. Only 11 states, plus D.C., allow beer shipping direct-to-consumer. At the Brewers Association, we're working to change that. You can help. We believe customers deserve choice, and that you should be able to get that seasonal you saw on social media, or that terrific beer you had on your honeymoon, or that famous Imperial Stout from another state to celebrate Stout Month. If you don't live where those beers are brewed, you generally can't get them. But consumers *want* that choice. The Sovos ShipCompliant/Harris Poll consumer survey finds that state laws are not keeping up with consumer demand. Eight out of 10 (81%) regular craft beer drinkers have tried a beer while traveling that they wish they could purchase but it’s not available near their home. Additionally, 88% say there should be greater legal access to DtC beer shipping. Here are 2 things you might not know about beer: 1️⃣ National Beer Day is celebrated on April 7th in the United States to commemorate the day in 1933 when the Cullen-Harrison Act went into effect. This act was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and allowed for the legal sale of beer with an alcohol content of 3.2% by weight (or 4% by volume) for the first time in over a decade. The Cullen-Harrison Act marked a significant step towards the end of Prohibition in the United States, which officially ended later that year with the ratification of the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on December 5, 1933. It’s no doubt that 2023 was a tough year for Craft Beer sales. The decline in beer sales has been well documented, as evolving consumer tastes merge with an abundant array of new alcohol beverages choices now flooding the market. Craft brewers have also been impacted by the rising costs in doing business, supply chain issues and a consumer shift to sweeter beverages. Younger generations, such as ‘Gen Z’, foregoing beer for ready-to-drink cocktails, spirits and weed. Aging out of craft beer drinkers. Some might even say creative stagnation in the industry. Stout popularity soars to make it Britain’s fastest growing beer!
