Celebrating my First IN-PERSON International Conference certification! I am thrilled to share my incredible experience of presenting and contributing to MTech Research paper titled “Statistical Modelling of Rheological Parameters for Limestone-Calcined clay incorporated Lightweight Self-compacting Concrete” in the 5th Euro- Mediterranean Conference of Environmental Integration (EMCEI-2023) on 4th October,2023 held at UNIVERSITY OF CALABRIA, RENDE, COSENZA, ITALY. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my mentor, advisor, and guide, Rajesh Kumar Sharma , Senior Scientist, Advanced Concrete, Steel, and Composites (ACSC) Group, CSIR-Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee for providing me the opportunity to present the conference paper. The event provided an invaluable platform for researchers and professionals from various fields to come together and exchange groundbreaking ideas, collaborate on innovative projects, and stay at the forefront of the latest advancements in Sustainable construction industry. One more Doctoral Candidate started in the DETOCS project 🎉 Diana Gómez Cano started as a PhD researcher in the #DETOCS project under the supervision of Dr. Abraham Teklay Gebremariam on the variability of materials on concrete performance, with special emphasis on the variation of #aggregate types on #concrete performance and their synergy of #SCMs in concrete. The study aims to identify critical material characteristics that influence concrete performance and develop guidelines or strategies for mitigating the downsides of material variability (including #recycledAggregates and SCMs) in the production of concrete. Her ultimate goal will be assessing such variations and providing practical solutions for achieving a more reliable and #sustainable #concreteProduction process. Biogenic Construction: Building the future with microbial minerals presents, the eMICP project. eMICP tackles the dual challenges of ageing infrastructure: the economic burden of maintaining concrete and its environmental impact, notably cement's contribution to CO2 emissions. It explores microbial-based carbonate precipitation as an innovative, sustainable technology to extend the lifespan of concrete structures. By promoting self-healing capabilities within concrete, the project aims to reduce the reliance on new materials, cutting down both costs and carbon footprint. The initiative seeks to overcome current limitations in the field through advanced modelling and simulation techniques, providing a cost-effective, scalable solution for enhancing the durability and sustainability of concrete infrastructure. Biogenic Construction: Building the future with microbial minerals presents, the Biological Self-Healing for Earthen Construction Materials PhD research. This research investigates the use of Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) by soil bacteria, like #Sporosarcinapasteurii, to enhance the durability of earth-based construction materials. By embedding these bacteria into compressed earth bricks, our study found a notable improvement in their strength and durability, with treated samples performing up to 70% better than untreated ones. I am happy to share that the first phase of my PhD research has been published in "Developments in the Built Environment"! In this paper, we used a hybrid optimization method (Taguchi-TOPSIS) to study the effect of five different parameters on the properties of cement mortar and obtain an optimum mix. The mortar involved the use of volcanic ash and dune sand to promote the sustainable use of materials. We successfully replaced Portland cement with 20% volcanic ash and natural aggregate with 20% dune sand while achieving superior performance for fresh, mechanical, and durability properties. The microstructural analysis performed also offered a deeper insight into the behavior of the optimum mix. This research would pave the way for further incorporation of other supplementary cementitious materials and the use of the produced cementitious matrix in a plurality of applications while alleviating the environmental impact of cement-based materials!
