School of Accountancy Missouri State University received recognition for its prowess in educational case writing, securing a spot among the top 20 aspirant universities in this category. This achievement highlights the outstanding contributions made by faculty members in developing compelling, insightful and impactful case studies within the field of #accounting. The program ranking is based on published education cases in accounting over the past six years by three accounting faculty members: Drs. Les Heitger, Mollie Adams and Kimberly Swanson Church, Ph.D. Kimberly Swanson Church, Ph.D., director of the School of Accountancy, also secured an individual spot in the top 20. The recognition is particularly significant, considering the benchmark set by BYU rankings. The rankings highlight award-winning research and are based on classifications of peer-reviewed articles in 12 top-tier accounting journals since 1990. “The BYU rankings are considered a quality metric for faculty/program level accounting research by considering publication counts in a select set of accounting journals and focus on both topical area and methodology,” Church said. #accounting #education #casewriting #highereducation #business #rankings

Incoming Uchicago Booth MFin student | CFA Level 1 Candidate | Passionate in managing multiple asset classes
As my Bachelor's degree almost comes to an end, I want to shout out to Professor James Deiotte for guiding me in choosing the path of my real passion. His undeniable expertise and incredible characteristics make my school year enjoyable and educational. The journey starts with an M&A class at Rady School of Management. With James' excellent teachings as well as patience in helping students like me, complex concepts were able to diminish into smaller pieces with easier analogies and information. Such invaluable teachings demonstrate Professor Deiotte's incredible expertise and I want to say anyone interested in learning about the financial world, please do have his class. Moreover, he is the Executive Director of the Master of Professional Accountancy program. For anyone interested in accounting and the interception of numbers and technology, I cannot recommend Professor Deiotte's enough. His teachings are more than just academic lessons; they are the keys to unlocking a deeper understanding of the financial world, making him an invaluable asset to the Rady School of Management and its students. #UCSD #thankyounote #professor #accounting

Two more academics have very publicly voiced support for eliminating the 150-hour requirement for CPA licensing. They present an alternative that is worthy of consideration. The alternative addresses another phenomenon - fear of examination. When I first became a director of an accounting program 18 years ago, I observed some solid students, who were clearly capable of graduate work, choosing to enroll in a competing graduate program (that costed more but produced lower quality outcomes) because the competitor did not require a GMAT score for admission. I dug into the data at this large public university and was able to demonstrate to faculty senate that a student's undergraduate GPA in their accounting program was a better predictor of success in the graduate program than a GMAT score. The University approved dropping the GMAT requirement. Since the pandemic, most schools have moved to a GMAT optional admission. Is fear of, unfamiliarity with, or unwillingness to be subject to examination keeping some students from pursuing the CPA? See https://lnkd.in/eN3rsq-K

Great insight Dr. Lassar, addressing the talent shortage may require a more pragmatic approach to seemingly strict education and licensing standards. At least temporarily, we may have to consider alternative approaches. More broadly, I’m curious as to how the profession in general views the proposal to eliminate the 150-hour rule. As you point out, the proposal may prove to be a worthy alternative.

According to a recent report by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the number of students earning accounting degrees continues to drop. However, brighter projections are expected for the upcoming academic year, with most university administrators anticipating steady or increased enrollments. Despite these challenges, the accounting profession remains a promising field. What is your firm doing to overcome the talent shortage? It was a delight to attend part 2 of the annual Victorian Commercial Teachers Association conference which brought more insights, learnings and connections. Some of the highlights on Day 2 included: - Attending Nigel Credlin's (Wealth Advisory Director at William Buck) presentation on Investing, and how to discuss and teach investment options with VCE Accounting and Business Management students. Such financial literacy and education can not only assist with real world case study understanding with mock exam based scenarios but also benefit these young minds early on, with the power of compounding, understanding these investment options and set them up financially for their future. - Meeting Joshua Jones and Jesse Spehar from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and understanding their roles in career engagement and relationships with various stakeholders across the Accounting industry such as high schools, universities, professional accounting firms and the industry. As someone who as been through the educational system, professional services and industry, it was incredibly insightful to understand the relationships between all of the respective bodies and what I would be able to contribute to the field in the future as an educator. - Attending Noel Boys' (Teaching Fellow at the Department of Accounting at The University of Melbourne) presentation on the University's perspective on the future of Accounting. It was fascinating to hear from him and to see some of the myths regarding our industry debunked such as the rise of AI reducing employment opportunities in Accounting. In fact, the contrary is projected to be true, as per government data, which forecasts a 9.2% increase in jobs in accounting (Source: https://lnkd.in/ggbWMZKJ). It was thought-provoking to reflect on Noel's presentation and compare them with my own conversations and discussions with parents and students over the years in their subject choices for VCE and university course selections. #comview23

I had the opportunity to contribute to the most recent edition of The CPA Journal to a piece authored by James Caruso on "What Might the Future of Accounting and Accounting Education Look Like?" (Spoiler: it involves higher ed/employer partnerships and work-based learning!) I'll drop the link in the comments, the article appears on pages 24-27. PS - many of you know that my husband, Zachary Dumont, just pivoted to public accounting after almost a decade in higher ed administration - is the next great frontier for former higher ed professionals the future of accounting education? #highered #learning #future #accounting
