Honoring Black Innovators and Leaders in Transportation- Andrew Jackson Beard I would like to introduce Andrew Jackson Beard . Andrew Jackson Beard was a former slave, a farmer, carpenter, blacksmith, railroad worker, businessman and inventor of the first automatic coupler for railcars. The Inspiration: November 23, 1897 , A railroad worker would stand between the two railroad cars to guide the linking pieces into place and insert a metal pin that held the pieces together. Often, the heavy cars would crush the middleman before he could drop the pin into place. Beard himself had lost a leg in a car coupling accident. The How: Beard eliminated the need for a worker to stand dangerously between the two train cars by designing an improvement to the railroad car couplers. Beard's railroad car coupler improvement included two horizontal jaws, which automatically locked together upon joining. Beard's improved and safer to use invention was the first automatic coupler widely used in the United States and easily saved many lives and limbs. The patent was sold for $50,000 in 1897 (equivalent to $1.8 million in 2022). #freight #experience #analytics #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #supplychainsolutions #logisticscompany #logistics #shippers #imports #everythingfreight #smallbusiness #environmentalsustainability #environmentallyfriendly #sustainability #oceanfreight

Today's FreightWaves' transportation moment in Black History goes to Andrew Jackson Beard! 💙 Andrew Jackson Beard, an inventor, made significant contributions to railroad safety with his improvements to the automatic railroad car coupler. 🙌 Born into slavery around 1849 in Eastlake, Alabama, Beard gained his freedom at age 16. After working in various industries, including milling and farming, he ventured into invention. 🤔 In 1881, Beard patented a double plow design, followed by another in 1887, earning substantial profits. He then went into engineering, patenting a rotary steam engine design in 1882. 🚂 Beard's pivotal inventions emerged in the railroad industry. Recognizing the hazards of manual car coupling, Beard patented two improvements to the Janney coupler between 1890 and 1892. 🚃 His inventions facilitated automatic coupling, enhancing safety and efficiency. The innovations, featuring two horizontal jaws that locked upon joining, revolutionized rail operations. 🛤️ In 1897 and 1899, Beard secured patents for his automatic coupler improvements, which became widely adopted in the United States. 🏛️ His advancements coincided with legislative action, as the Federal Safety Appliance Act of 1887 mandated automatic couplers on railroad cars. 👨⚖️ Despite his entrepreneurial success, Beard faced challenges in later life. Limited information exists about his final years, but reports suggest he experienced paralysis and financial hardship. He passed away in 1921, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and safety contributions to the railroad industry. 🖤 In recognition of his pioneering work, Beard was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006. 🥇 PLEASE SHARE! #blackhistorymonth #transportation #logistics #supplychain #blackinventors

Honoring Black Innovators and Leaders in Transportation- Elijah McCoy I would like to introduce Elijah McCoy. Elijah was a 19th century African American inventor best known for inventing lubrication devices used to make train travel more efficient. The Inspiration: After studying the inefficiencies inherent in the existing system of oiling axles, McCoy invented a lubricating cup that distributed oil evenly over the engine's moving parts. He obtained a patent for this invention, which allowed trains to run continuously for long periods of time without pausing for maintenance. The How: His invention was a valve mechanism that could supply oil drop by drop to the moving parts of machinery. Although McCoy's achievements were recognized in his own time, his name did not appear on the majority of the products that he devised. Lacking the capital with which to manufacture his lubricators in large numbers, he typically assigned his patent rights to his employers or sold them to investors. In 1920, toward the end of his life, McCoy formed the Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company to produce lubricators bearing his name. #freight #experience #analytics #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #supplychainsolutions #logisticscompany #logistics #shippers #imports #everythingfreight #smallbusiness #environmentalsustainability #environmentallyfriendly #sustainability #oceanfreight

As researchers and historians, we still look to Family Bibles as traditional guardians of family history. Because these books were so cherished, families assumed they would be the safest vault for knowledge that needed to pass from generation to generation. In keeping with the value people placed in them, family Bibles were also works of art. The craftsmanship required to manufacture books of such quality is hard to come by these days. In addition to the historical trasures written in them, family Bibles also hold clues about how physical beauty and quality establish enduring prestige, credibility, and value. This is a big part of why Müllerhaus Legacy goes to such extremes to put beauty, creative excellence, and quality into everything we do to support our customers’ legacies. Having information about your past is important. But it will only be intergenationally valued if it’s preserved in a format that is in keeping with the value of the knowledge and wisdom it holds. Beauty = value.

In 1919, when the Bauhaus was founded in Weimar, Hugo Junkers was already an established engineer and entrepreneur, known for his revolutionary ideas in aircraft construction. Although Junkers was not directly associated with the Bauhaus, he shared the movement's fundamental principles: functionality, simplicity, and the use of modern technologies and materials in design. Hugo Junkers' influence on the Bauhaus is best understood through his innovative constructions and progressive use of materials such as duralumin. These materials were also applied in the designs of the Bauhaus school, particularly in architecture and furniture design, where simplicity of form and functionality were paramount. Imagine a scene where Bauhaus students undertake an excursion to the Junkers works. Fascinated by the airplanes, they recognise the parallels to their own ideals: the fusion of art and technology, the creation of objects that are both beautiful and practical. Inspired by Junkers' pioneering work, they return to the studio, ready to push the boundaries of traditional art and create something entirely new. Thus, although Hugo Junkers was not directly a part of the Bauhaus, his spirit of innovation and pursuit of functionality were closely intertwined with the ideals of the Bauhaus movement. His legacy continues in the timeless Bauhaus designs celebrated to this day, and in every Junkers watch that measures not only time but also tells a story of creativity and progress.
Happy Birthday! 🎉 Hugo Junkers was born on February 3rd, 1859 in Rheydt, Germany. We celebrate his life to this day with every Junkers watch that combines beauty and technology. Cheers to the visionary behind our legacy! #Junkers #JunkersWatches #BornInGermany
