Internships at Gateway are designed to impart practical industry training and real-project exposure through experiential learning. Last week, Gateway's Director of Project Management, Aaron L. Richardson, PMP, led our interns on a tour of North Strabane Township Park for a first-hand look at the integrated solutions we provided to develop a safe and beautiful park for the community of North Strabane and its visitors. Gateway intern Sydney Stahl, an upcoming senior at Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania studying Environmental Biology said, "The weekly site tours offer a hands-on experience that allows interns to apply our schooling as well as see projects that were originally designed in the office, in person. Each tour gives insight into projects in a variety of ways by teaching us about the potential and actual issues faced, the solutions created, the processes of guiding stakeholders, and the project management operations, especially as they relate to specific personnel resources." Gateway Engineers is pleased to announce that Jacob Sutton, E.I.T., S.E.O., is now performing the function of Project Manager. Throughout his time at Gateway, Jacob has worked on and supported a variety of projects from our market sectors, continuously demonstrating their commitment to helping our clients reach a higher level of success. Gateway's Project Manager Development System, created by Aaron L. Richardson, PMP, Director of Project Management, continually engages, prepares, develops, and improves the Project Management skills, behaviors and competencies of employees pursuing or performing the function of Project Manager here at Gateway. After receiving his associate degree in environmental science, Jacob realized that furthering his education and pursuing a career in civil and environmental engineering would provide him with the opportunity to positively impact the environment and community. Jacob then went on to receive his bachelor's degree in civil and environmental engineering from Youngstown State University. Since beginning his career at Gateway in July of 2020, Jacob has obtained his Engineer-In-Training (EIT) and Pennsylvania Sewage Enforcement Officer (SEO) certifications. When he isn’t in the field or the office, Jacob enjoys many outdoor activities including fishing, hunting and hiking. As we prepare to celebrate our 70th anniversary, let's take a look back at our origin story. "How did Gateway Engineers get its name?" is a question we are frequently asked. Gateway can trace its Pittsburgh heritage all the way back to 1882, to the first surveying crews that staked out building and infrastructure sites of the rapidly growing city, its steel mills, and the communities that housed its residents. Our corporate ancestors include highly respected firms who played prominent roles in developing Pittsburgh and the communities throughout the region: McBride Surveying and Engineering; Robert A. Schneider; Blum, Weldin and Company; Braun and Fulton; M.E. Frye and Associates, Gray-Warnick Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Inc. (EMI). Gateway's Founding Fathers were leaders at these firms, often working together as complementary partners. One specific project, however, would bring these individuals together and serve as the catalyst for them to form their own firm. The redevelopment of downtown Pittsburgh in the late 1950s, known as Renaissance I and II, transformed the city from its industrial age into what it is today. Gateway Towers, located at Gateway Center in downtown Pittsburgh, was designed to be the the city’s largest and most luxurious apartment building at the time. Construction began in late 1962 and was completed in mid 1964. After being recognized for the engineering and surveying services we provided for the Gateway Towers, the rest is truly history. Here at Gateway, people are at the center of everything we do, and as employees, they are our most valuable asset. Before #NationalSafetyMonth comes to an end, we want to recognize our Health and Safety Compliance Specialist, Tyler Dickson, for his dedication to keeping all of us safe year-round. A typical day for Tyler begins with him reviewing current jobsite work with field personnel to see if any additional safety measures or assistance may be needed. Throughout the day, Tyler performs safety site visits, reviewing jobsites, potential hazards, and any work being done. Most importantly, he checks in with employee’s on-site to discuss safety observations, trends, and any resources needed to improve the job task. "Gateway’s philosophy is that our people are our best resource, and we have the responsibility and duty to protect them," Tyler said.
