A rounded education is very important and I do owe a lot to the opportunities that Barney gave me.
🙏 We remembered and gave thanks to the people who laid the foundations for our wonderful School 140 years ago, as the Barney community celebrated Founders’ Day back in February #BarneyBriefing 💙🤎

🔍 Analyzing Target Medical Schools: A Strategic Approach for Pre-Meds I recently came across this insightful infographic from the University of Michigan Medical School, showcasing a snapshot of their admitted applicants. For all the aspiring doctors out there, such data can be invaluable in guiding your choices during your crucial pre-med years. A few takeaways: Prioritize Experience: Notice how many more hours successful applicants dedicated to working with underserved populations, compared to roles in student government. Diverse Interests Count: From social justice to performance arts and even athletics, holistic experiences seem to resonate with admissions. When time is of the essence, and the medical school journey is competitive, channeling your energy into high-impact areas can make all the difference. Make informed choices, and leverage insights like these to strategize your way into your dream school! 📚💡 #PreMedLife #MedicalSchool #StrategicPlanning #FutureDoctors

Daniel Stid writes a very thorough piece on the difficulty, messiness, and sheer necessity of the work of Braver Angels, which he understands well. (I especially appreciated that he called us "countercultural," which is both true and flattering.) This line, in particular, spoke to me: "Both those who are quick to salute or criticize Braver Angels often fail to grasp the unique and nuanced aspects of the organization’s work." It's hard to explain what we do — I often feel like it's something you have to experience for yourself. But working on the frontlines of our country's political polarization has proven to be more challenging, rewarding, and hopeful than I ever could've imagined. The work of depolarization is, as Liz Joyner says, "both mandatory and impossible." To better understand us and the work that we do, check out this write-up. 👇
Braver Angels has always faced stiff headwinds in its bid to depolarize a country increasingly at loggerheads with itself. Now it seeks to do something even harder: catalyze a movement for civic renewal.

Thanks for the insights @justicefunders. Acknowledging the stolen native lands we are on, is the beginning of the beginning of a processs to imagine pathways to repair and rejuvenation. I think incoporating the payments to a Land Trust into overhead admin costs is an excellent idea and way to systematize and normalize the giving to land trusts in our work… as part of the beginning of the beginning.

In this recently published personal story, Tara Brown, Board Treasurer and former Executive Director of Hidden Leaf Foundation, shares how the ask to pay honor taxes (such as Shuumi) stirred her to consider the decades of impact her ancestors have had on this land in the Bay Area, the original land of the Ohlone people. “This part of my family lineage exploration has been about awkward truth-telling, finding our relatedness even in its discomfort, and remembering who we are and how we belong.” Read or listen to Tara Brown’s story below. Thank you for organizing us, Justice Funders!

Working with your board and council is key to aligning strategy for the future of your community. A reminder that in our industry, an open mind is one of the best things a board, council or court member can bring to the table. Grateful to have that in a community where I work AND live. #medc #mckinney #mckinneytexas #mckinneytx #pipeline #projectpipeline #development #economicdevelopment #land #landdevelopment #strategy #strategicthinking #strategicplanning #boardretreat
We spent the day yesterday with our staff and board evaluating and strategizing about our high-level misson, KPI's, and goals, and it felt only fitting to end the day on the eighth floor of the District 121 Building as the highest point in McKinney. Thankful to have a board and staff with great vision to see the future, hearts to strengthen the community, and hands to work out what strategic growth in McKinney can look like.
