It took me some time to develop this concept in my career. I often attended meetings but feared saying something wrong or not perceived as the “right idea.” Over the past few years, I’ve learned the importance of speaking up and brainstorming out loud. Even if your idea isn't perfect, it can spark a conversation that leads to the right solution when you collaborate with others. I'm fortunate to have had and still have leaders who encourage and value my voice. If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be this: Speak up early in your career. Seek out leaders who invest in your voice and truly listen. It will transform the trajectory of your career!

Appreciating people instead of rushing to judge them takes genuine effort. It means focusing on understanding their circumstances rather than their qualifications or caliber. Remember, you’re not in a position to judge someone’s journey. Focus on doing what you’re supposed to do, and let kindness guide your interactions. And even if someone, even the almighty, were to pass judgment, our compassion and understanding would likely evoke pity rather than condemnation. Imagine a world where appreciation flows freely, where connections deepen effortlessly. We don’t need a perfect moment or a checklist to show gratitude. We just need sincerity. So let’s be genuine in our appreciation, let’s uplift each other without hesitation. Our kindness can ignite a spark of positivity that transforms lives. Don’t wait, start today. Our authenticity is the greatest gift to the world and each of us walks a different path, facing our own trials and triumphs. “What if she doesn’t like me?” - my old boss, Sarah the Critic whispered to me. “I still like myself, no matter what,” I calmly replied, almost stumbling as I realised I actually 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 the truth of my words. I boldly strode onto stage and smiled, to which Michelle “MACE” Curran beamed right back with a smile that reached the eyes. 🤩 “Cool hair!” I heard her speak. Whoa, this bad@ass thinks I’m cool, 𝙢𝙚!? We quickly hit it off and I had to be cognisant of not monoplosing her time. Since then we’ve become good friends, mentors to each other and supporters during challenging moments, for which I’m extremely grateful. What if I had not walked up to say hello? Where would I be now? Who is to say, we can’t know the outcome of actions we might have or didn’t take. What I 𝗰𝗮𝗻 tell you is this… It’s often better than you ever imagined it could be. You never know who that stranger might become to you. You never know the impact you will have on someone else. Work on liking and accepting yourself first. This allows you to be fully expressed, which means people meant for you will be drawn to your energy. It also means your happiness and personal experiences don’t rest on tenuous and often impossible conditions from the external world and others. Know thyself, accept thyself, love thyself. From that point go out and be curious! Learn about others, build bonds that may last a day, a season or a lifetime. You’re behind the controls. How well are you ‘connecting’ with the important people in your life, and what might you be doing that’s disconnecting you?   Consciously and subconsciously the way we interact with our staff, colleagues, friends and families either builds energy between us or drains it.   Practicing empathy might make us feel awkward or vulnerable, however what it does is make that person feel seen when we touch reveal their humanity. That person is suddenly not alone anymore.   Listening, without interruption, judgement or bias might just be the what someone needs to get a load off their back and move forward. We all love being appreciated. But we hardly give appreciation. Isn't it ? Mann mein toh soch liya - Vo kitni achi lag rahi - but never said. Kaam toh acha laga, but bataya nahi. Khana tasty toh hai, but never acknowledged. So harsh truth right? I could think of just a few reasons why a human doesn't appreciate! 1) Think they know already 2) Haven't seen it before 3) Ignore - Don't want to let them know 4) Don't have time 5) Difference priorities 6) Cultural differences 7) Talk past each other maybe more... But we all know how we want to hear that good about us. What will it take to appreciate? Open mind and empathy. THAT'S IT! So, see around yourself; appreciate that person today for anything & see their smiles. Comment on how it feels doing this. P.S. - Last night one of my friends texted me this and I just want to make a ripple effect.

At this time of year, you can ask anyone “How are you going?” and they say “Busy!”.   I was recently having a chat with Matt Grech and Fernando Villalon, and we talked about the importance of being authentic in our conversations, be it at work or in our personal lives. In fact, Fern pointed out that “Busy” has become the new “Not too bad”, generic responses that are more like a fob-off than a genuine engagement with the person.   There are plenty of articles you can read about authentic conversations. My summary, however, is that the art of being authentic comes down to sharing some personal detail and having the courage to be vulnerable. Plus, ensuring you are creating a two-way dialogue by asking open ended questions, being an active listener and having an open mind about other people’s opinions.   Research shows that the greatest contributor to personal happiness, including workplace satisfaction, is strong and genuine personal relationships. One of the simplest ways to build and maintain strong relationships are simply authentic conversations.   So, the next time someone asks “How are you going?” what will be your authentic answer?   If you need some inspiration, check out one of my favourite stand-up comedy sets from British comedian Bill Bailey. 😂
