The Embassies of Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America urge the transitional government to immediately halt recent actions that have imposed illicit and unacceptable costs on donor governments, United Nations agencies, and their implementing partners who are seeking to provide humanitarian assistance in South Sudan. Current examples of efforts to impose costs on humanitarian assistance include the ePetroleum Accreditation Permit, customs fees and charges, the electronic cargo tracking note, the laboratory test on food rations, and the security escort fee. Such attempts are contrary to international practice and to South Sudanese law, which clarifies that the United Nations, UN specialized agencies, diplomatic missions, or other international donors and their contractors, grantees, and implementing partners in South Sudan are exempt from excise duties, customs duties and fees, and other taxes, charges, and fees on goods and services directly related to diplomatic missions or donor-funded projects. When the transitional government imposes such costs, it is diverting life-saving aid from South Sudanese people in need. It is the obligation of the transitional government to reduce the costs and risks faced by those seeking to provide humanitarian assistance to its people.

CBSA's 2023 Year in Review is a thought-provoking read with some eye-opening statistics and numbers. Here are a few key highlights: 🚚 Over 4.5 million commercial trucks crossed into Canada 💰 Canada collected a substantial $32.7 billion in duties and taxes 📊$199 million in anti-dumping and countervailing duties 🚔 RCMP & CBSA intercepted 1,573 stolen vehicles ready for export 🚨 1,600 penalties totaling $1,301,600 for food, plant, and animal import violations. With an average penalty of $813.50. 🤔 ✈️ Significant 46% increase in travelers from 2022 💊 Drug Seizures noticeably increased by 17%, with 35,600 drug seizures. 🔫 A staggering 75% increase with 13,800 weapons seized Looking ahead, the growth of duty and tax collection numbers with the full implementation of CARM is an interesting point to follow. As for the average import penalty amount, it's curious why it's so low at $813.50. We could do a much better job of issuing AMPs to non-compliant importers. Thank you, CBSA, for protecting Canadians. May 2024 be the year of modernizing the border with CARM. #CBSA #BorderSecurity #Trade #YearInReview #Customs 🌐 Canada Border Services Agency | Agence des services frontaliers du Canada

It is interesting to note that it is only quoted “AMPs to non-compliant importers”. But what about the brokers? Are we 💯% compliant? Or is not this a fact that we always or mostly enjoy the privilege of onus being on the importers ultimately and behind this lies the whole reality. I was surprised to learn in a mentor session for Australian Brokerage that they carry the most burden then could be anywhere else as under licensing regulations they have a section to report any suspicious activities, foul play, inconsistencies in the paperwork to Comissioner ABF failing which may face heavy penalties, cancellation of license and even prison. I think we should have the similar accountability and also introduce individual LCB then just CCS so that the employees working are more vigilant and responsible applying there customs knowledge and cannot be forced as a data entry tools expected to merely follow instructions without a question. That should creat a culture that there is a reason for customs and we as a brokers have our purpose for being there.

The government stance on the Chaman border needs immediate reconsideration to avoid further losses and undesirable outcomes of ongoing Parlat. The government should implement a policy that respects the historical and cultural ties of the borderland communities. Moreover, the member chamber of commerce of Chaman district has proposed a policy solution involving the implementation of ongoing projects, including the Master Plan Chaman (which has the potential to employ around 2,000 daily wage earners), the International Trade Terminal Management System (ITTMS), and the Chaman Special Economic Zone under CPEC. Additionally, the solution includes establishing a Pak-Afghan Joint Market along the border instead of relying on the BISP initiative. https://lnkd.in/d858g9us
