"Timing is everything" and "if it's meant to be, it will be" are familiar sayings many of us have pondered. Last night, at 10:00 PM, everything clicked for me as I completed my first semester with Vanderbilt Peabody College. This journey is just beginning, but I'm committed for the long haul because of the program's exceptional quality and impact. - A year ago, I faced disappointment when I wasn't accepted into a local doctoral program in Business Administration. After some reflection, I resumed my search and decided to aim high by applying to Vanderbilt's Leadership and Learning in Organizations program. As Wayne Gretzky said, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." To my surprise and delight, I was accepted. - Last night's culmination was a testament to this program's value. My team and I collaborated with a local nonprofit in Orlando, designing a dashboard to help track metrics more effectively. This experience was both challenging and rewarding, offering me the meaningful work I'd been seeking. - Life often presents us with unexpected turns, but my path became clear last night. Trusting the process, even when it's unclear, has been invaluable advice for me. Once more into the fray! The last time I touched anything to do with math or statistics, the year was 2002. The result was a C- and a personal oath to never have to deal with math again. But no belief can stand the test of time. Especially when it is rooted in comfort-based decisions. As I embark on this next semester in our Columbia University Human Capital Management program, the material is sure to push me outside my comfort zone. It’s about value-based discomfort. Being uncomfortable for no reason is reckless and ROI negative, but discomfort that is tied to deliberate growth or a value-aligned endstate is a worthy pursuit. I am keenly aware of my capabilities and limitations as a Talent practitioner. To be the best teammate and leader I can, it is time to enter the ring with those limitations. After all, how can I push my team members to challenge themselves in unknown territories if I am unwilling to go there myself? Grateful for this chance to grow and excited for this challenge. #bringthenoise #bringonthemath

Happy Spring! College decision day is about a month or so away, and some students are still grappling with which college to attend next year. This is a high-class problem! Yet, teen indecision is understandable. For many students, deciding where to attend college feels like a make-or-break choice that will affect their future career options and earning potential. I felt the same when I was seventeen.    As a college professor and coach, I guide students to make decisions that are authentic to themselves, rather than succumbing to the pressures and opinions of their peers, social media, or family. I'm not always a Gladwell fan, but here's a well-articulated explanation of one of the many reasons to ***let prestige go, find a great college MATCH***. I realize this is easier said than done, but excelling in college is what leads to financial success and happiness much more so than attending the most "impressive" school you can gain admission to.
