Unfortunately, 5.8 million tonnes of clothes are thrown out every year in Europe. That's roughly 11.3 kg per person. #HorizonEU projects are imagining a future where circularity and sustainability redefine current #FastFashion standards. Some examples include: 🟡 The New Cotton Project created a novel textile ‘superfibre’ from post-consumer waste. 🟡 The CISUTAC project will establish sustainable, inclusive and large-scale value chains for material reuse, repair, and recycling. 🟡 The FReSCH (Fashion’s Responsible Supply Chain Hub) project led by Hakan Karaosman and Donna Marshall focused on climate action and social justice in fashion supply chains. 🟡 FISHSkin Horizon developed this new category of raw material, bringing together mariculture and the fashion industry. PhD, Assistant Professor at Cardiff University, Chief Scientist at FReSCH; Chair at Union of Concerned Researchers in Fashion
I am happy, humbled and honoured to see that FReSCH (Fashion's Responsible Supply Chain Hub), our action research project exploring complex fashion supply chains at the nexus of decarbonisation and just transition, has been named one of the pioneering research projects by EU Science, Research and Innovation European Commission Just transition is a fundamental concept for supply chain management but neither discipline pays attention to the other and little is known about how supply chains can be orchestrated as socio-ecological systems to manage these transitions. Building from a wide range of just transition examples, Prof Donna Marshall and I explain how to move beyond instrumental supply chain practices to supply chains functioning in harmony with the planet and its people. Conducting research with garment workers and lower tier suppliers, we then bring just transition to fashion to explore how to ensure that the transition from a high-carbon to low-carbon fashion industry takes place in a just, inclusive and fair way. By immersion in fashion brands, suppliers and workers’ realities across multiple supply chains, FReSCH identifies challenges and issues related to just transitions, whilst proposing research pathways to inspire future research and collaboration using innovative and creative methods to answer complex questions. We will launch our new website soon but in the meantime some of our contributions can be seen below. Karaosman, H., Marshall, D. and Irene, W. 2024. Why fix it when it ain't broke? This is what we often hear on our journey of innovation. Today, in this post, we will examine how efforts to clean up the denim industry might have been mere window dressing, lacking fundamental impact. https://lnkd.in/e4GaqMKt #denim #sustainability #sustainabledenim

UN Environment Programme's early 2023 report ‘Sustainability and Circularity in the Textile Value Chain: A Global Roadmap’ builds on research and consultations with 140 global textile value chain stakeholers, including brands, retailers, materials producers, policymakers, NGOs, and organizations like Fashion for Good, Textile Exchange, and Global Fashion Agenda. The result: a common agenda structured around nine focus areas to make the textiles sector circular. UNEP has complemented their Roadmap report with stakeholder-specific annexes—the Innovators and Recyclers annex has been a great resource for us as we continue our #Bylon journey, by highlighting barriers, priorities, and key actions to achieve circularity in our industry. Transformative Leader & Sustainability SME | Former CEO of Cascale (SAC) | Driving Collective Action at Scale | Climate, ESG & Sustainability Leadership| Strategic Partnerships | Board Director
When it comes to decarbonization, the time for pilots and small projects is over. After the hottest summer on record, when temperatures in Death Valley reached 128 degrees fahrenheit (53 degrees celsius), 60,000 people died from heat exposure in Europe, and deadly heat waves impacted 90% of the population in India, we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that climate change is accelerating. And no one can escape it. Our industry certainly isn’t spared. I believe the mindset the fashion industry needs right now is one of openness and a commitment to change that only stops in the most exceptional circumstances. Thanks to The Interline for sharing my thoughts here: #sustainability #FashionIndustry #Collaboration
The CEO of The Sustainable Apparel Coalition, Amina Razvi, explains why the scale and the speed of the change that planet and people demand will only be met through urgent, collective action: interli.net/45uswOZ This exclusive op-ed was published shortly before the SAC's annual meeting in Boston, where the next stage of the vision for supply chain decarbonisation was outlined. I was made from leftover fabric – Please wear me out! For PERFORMANCE DAYS we have specifically designed and developed these ‘give away’ tote bags, made from 100% leftover fabric from our stock. Fashion is one of the least sustainable industries worldwide. About 5 million tonnes of textiles are thrown away every year in the EU. The European Commission is proposing rules to make producers responsible for the whole lifecycle of textile products, taking responsibility to reduce, reuse and recycle textile waste and boosting markets for used textiles. - At LTP Group we support the proposal and are looking forward to learning about the development in this area. We know that we are not going to save the planet by producing these bags – but what we DO hope is, that our visitors at booth E13 I E14 will stop and think! Please don’t hesitate to meet with our Global Sustainability & Compliance Director Lene Mortensen and learn more about our approach and procedures to minimize waste in the production. #ltpgroup #performancedays #leftoverfabric #wearmeout #reduse #reuse #recycle

[From the Industry] It’s no secret: fashion has a sustainability problem. In today’s culture of one-click purchases, short-term wear, and subsequent disposal in landfills, the damaging impact of fast fashion is undeniable. While circular economy solutions such as clothing rental, deposit and reuse schemes are gaining traction, it’s crucial that we recognise their limitations. So many of our everyday items of clothing contain artificial components such as polyester and nylon, which come from non-renewable, fossil-based sources like petroleum. Even traditional fibres like virgin cotton have an embarrassingly large carbon footprint due to the ways they are grown, harvested, and processed. Thankfully, a new wave of innovators are working to create more sustainable alternatives to fossil-based fabrics. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Innovation #GreenerFuture
