An Equinix Datacentre heats the Paris Olympic Aquatic Centres; it's too positive a Datacentre story to make headlines. However, because we will only have more "Data" needing "Centres" for the foreseeable future, this type of societal planning & collaboration needs to become the norm, not the exception. There has been several hundred computers heating water in Paris - since the 'the cloud' was invented. I think they were called Carnot? Or something like that. Also it is very common in places like Stockholm.
Re-injecting the heat generated by DC in the city heat network …great ! Hardly a new idea though. Two main difficulties : - the heat coming from the DC is not hot enough for most urban heat network, requiring to raise the temperature to 60 degrees C (via a heat pump). That is costly. - to make DC heat reuse scalable and pervasive would require the DC to be within reach of a district heat network. This isn’t the case as most DC(particularly the hyperscalers ones) are built outside of cities, in areas where there are no heat networks to connect to. Despite this Equinix story being nice, I’m afraid this will likely remain the exception and not the norm. PS: heating the roof garden and distributing the strawberries and tomatoes to the community, is a bit of a marketing joke and greenwashing at its best 😂
It's great to see positive news about Data Centers getting noticed. I remember hearing about Aalborg University in Denmark in the early 2000s. They started using extra heat from their Data Center to warm buildings on campus. Then there's Qarnot. They've been using their Q.rad heaters in homes, offices, and even to heat a swimming pool in Paris before this. Great to see these projects have inspired others worldwide. I agree Garry, It's important that more places start planning and working together like this for a better future.
I’ve seen district heating used on campuses to warm sidewalks in the winter, eliminating the need for snow plows or snow blowers.
This is really a municipality coordination issue. When the permits are requested there really should be someone on the city planning committee that is looking for these opportunities.
Thanks for sharing💡🤠
Great if you have a heat network already in the ground. But most of the world doesn't. So what if we could distribute the heat without pipes?! What if we could do it by fibre? #watchthisspace #heat #datacentres #AI #netzero

1moI don't see why Ireland wouldn't take advantage of the opportunity to heat apartments, homes, and offices more sustainably and reducing carbon emissions from gas-powered heating systems. Introducing data centers to Ireland could be highly beneficial. Is the main issue related to electric gridlock and insufficient capacity? It appears that renewable energy sources such as wind and tidal power should provide a solution. Though, I may be oversimplifying the situation!
