As president of the U.S. Geological Survey's Veterans Employee Resource Group, one of my mandates is outreach to veterans and those still serving and encouraging them to consider joining us at the USGS. The last data set shows that only 12.61% (946) of the USGS employees are veterans, while I know thousands of veterans are transitioning yearly.
On the surface, USGS jobs appear to be only scientific and exclude most military-learned disciplines, but that could not be further from the truth! Many military jobs transfer well to the Survey.
Some of these jobs include:
IT, Admin, Safety, Sensor Technicians, Communications, Emergency Management, Water Technicians, Industrial Hygiene, Operations, Unmanned Arial Vehicles, Maintenance Techs, and much more that support the science.

The USGS (United States Geological Survey) is a science bureau within the United States Department of the Interior. The USGS provides science about the natural hazards that threaten lives and livelihoods; the water, energy, minerals, and other natural resources we rely on; the health of our ecosystems and environment; and the impacts of climate and land-use change. Our scientists develop new methods and tools to enable timely, relevant, and useful information about the Earth and its processes.
I love educating anyone about what we do in the USGS so feel free to contact me.
