Is there a more cost-effective way to estimate vehicles' speeds on streets, rather than relying on pricey traffic sensors such as RADAR and cameras? In our latest paper published in IEEE #IEEEsensors, we introduce an innovative approach for acoustic vehicle speed estimation, employing deep learning techniques on a carefully constructed multimodal feature vector extracted from a single-channel audio signal. Unlike previous studies limited to controlled environments, our method provides a practical solution for real-world scenarios. Demonstrating higher accuracy compared to existing literature, this affordable and reliable approach holds the potential to increase the adoption of traffic sensors, thereby enhancing data availability for traffic managers.
