In Washington, D.C., Congresswoman Ann MacLane Kuster (D-NH), along with Representatives Bonamici (D-OR), and Lawler (R-NY), have introduced a new legislative proposal aimed at tackling the #childcare workforce shortage prevalent in #NewHampshire and across the United States. The "Early Childhood Workforce Advancement Act" seeks to enhance and broaden career and technical education (CTE) initiatives tailored for early childhood education professionals. By facilitating increased access to training and knowledge acquisition, the legislation endeavors to cultivate a more robust pool of skilled early childhood educators, thereby addressing critical gaps in the childcare sector. IASW Statement on Crisis in Children’s Services: IASW welcomes the discussion this week following publication of the @ChildLawProject report including a letter from a retired District Court Judge, regarding the crisis for children in care in Ireland: https://lnkd.in/ekEaU3x7 IASW shares the concerns expressed by Judge Dermot Simms, whose comments reflect concerns raised previously by IASW in a letter to @tusla in April 2022, calling for a comprehensive response to the crisis identified by social workers: https://lnkd.in/e5psXqcK The crisis in question reflects the basis of three motions adopted at IASW’s recent AGM, calling for the establishment of an interdepartmental working group to plan the creation of a dedicated service to support care-experienced children and their families, and requesting Government to review the use of Special Emergency Accommodation arrangements for some children in care, with a view to ceasing their use. We also call for the establishment of a comprehensive and effective support system for foster carers. We welcome Judge Simms’ comment that ‘social workers and their team leaders, who are working with the most challenging of cases and who give their evidence on a daily basis, are above reproach, with commitment and work ethic far beyond any possible job description’ and also Tusla - Child and Family Agency Interim CEO Kate Duggan acknowledgement that Tusla faces “unprecedented challenges,” incl a severe shortage of #SocialWorkers as highlighted in IASW’s 2022 report on training, recruitment & retention in the profession: https://lnkd.in/eCDFqymY We need a strategic plan for social work in Ireland, including taking steps to double the number of social work graduates annually. A coordinated, systemic response to the challenges is essential. That’s why IASW are positively engaged w/ social work employers & universities to work together for effective solutions to problems caused by the chronic shortage of social workers. Only a joined-up + solution-focused response will ensure we can provide effective services.

We have launched a Lexicon for Social Care. The lexicon is a live resource comprising sourced definitions for key words, phrases and frequently used terms in legislation and standards for social care services, such as nursing homes or services for people with disabilities. While standardised language exists in healthcare, this is the first of its kind for social care. It aims to improve the quality and consistency of communications within services, ensuring everyone is using the same terminologies. The lexicon was developed following intensive research and stakeholder engagement, including with an expert group of academics, regulatory staff, advocacy groups and those with prior experience in developing lexicons. We also engaged with residents in social care services, working with them and listening to their preferred choice of terminology to include in this resource. Adult social care remains a leading legal requirement for councils, but ten years on from the revised care act, things are not improving. An insight commissioned by the cross-party team at the Local Government Association reveals the challenges ahead. Having the right service and staff is essential. This worrying insight highlights the need for a unified, cross-party approach to support our most vulnerable elderly citizens.
