Frank X. Shaw’s Post

This week, I had the surreal experience of meeting Ryan Reynolds at the Meltwater conference. Ryan plays one of my absolute favorite comic book heroes, Deadpool, in addition to being an overall amazing and creative person. It is possible I constructed an entire presentation from one very short scene in the first Deadpool, evidence below. Ryan's presentation at the event gave me a ton to think about! First, I am super excited for his new movie coming out, "Deadpool and Wolverine." Then, on a slightly more professional level, there were three points he made I just loved: 1. In response to a question about how he chose the people and brands he worked with and for, he said, "I'd rather work with people who can fail with integrity than win with bullshit," and in terms of a guiding principle, you could do a whole lot worse. 2. While talking about some of the marketing he does, and the ads he creates (he called his stuff "fastvertising"), he said, "at the end, it is just an f'ing ad" and for me this was a reminder that we are really supposed to be having just a smidge of fun in what we do, and that when we start taking things too seriously we can move slowly and miss things. 3. While talking about his show, "Welcome to Wrexham," he discussed the tension between his and his partner Rob's vision for the show and the original team filming it. Ryan and Rob thought the show should be centered on the people in the town, their stories. The first crew wanted to center it on Rob and Ryan, the celebrities of it all. Ryan was convinced that by far the more interesting stories would be found all around. He was right. What a great reminder that it can be easy to see all of us as the heroes of the story, but the real heroes are often just out of sight and overlooked. Go find them. Now, check out the photos. I mean, he may be just a smidge taller than me, but with some lifts in my shoes and a bunch of working out? I have a shot.

Hey Frank congratulations! Just a small nit - the show you refer to is called "Welcome to Wrexham" and I highly recommend it ...the star of the show are the people and culture of Wales, as well as the importance of football to the culture of the UK...It is more a real-life Ted Lasso. The journey over the last 3 years has been amazing, human, and poignant. https://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/welcome-to-wrexham

Well, at least you already had practice with swords!

Love that line: Work with people who can fail with integrity vs win with BS. That’s the experience of a trusted, principled team. Such an essential reminder.

I just saw this…it’s great!! I love the comment “no need for lifts in your shoes!” My  favorite comment above “rings true all my life…” I’d much” rather work w/people who fail w/integrity… than win w/BS”! Hallelujah!
