Renewable energy executives stress the urgent need for streamlined permitting processes in the U.S., particularly for power transmission infrastructure and grid connectivity. Lengthy interconnection timelines and regulatory hurdles hinder progress, with states like Texas enjoying advantages over more restrictive regions like California. Faster permitting is crucial for meeting climate goals and fostering renewable investment. #RenewableEnergy #PermittingProcess #GridConnectivity #CleanEnergy #ClimateGoals

"The U.S. government needs to streamline permitting for renewable energy projects, including development of power transmission infrastructure and grid connectivity, to support needed growth, executives said on Thursday at a conference in Houston. "It's a tremendous issue," said NRG Energy interim CEO Larry Coben, pointing to difficulties around interconnection, the rules that new electricity generators must follow to connect to the grid. It can take up to four years to move a project through the interconnection process, according to the American Clean Power Association (ACP). Coben lamented that it is much harder to move through permitting processes in places like California than in Texas. States with fewer regulatory restrictions are going to be the big winners in attracting renewable investment and growth, said Andrés Gluski, CEO of utility firm The AES Corporation." #interconnection #cleanenergytransition #nxtgen Abby Hopper Sam Walsh Daniel Weeks Brett Porter Jason Cortes Gavin Mooney Alicia Lechner Byron Kominek NXTGEN Clean Energy Solutions

Great to read the insights on the role Australia’s existing gas infrastructure could play in our energy transition in a new report authored by Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Commissioned by Jemena, Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) and APA Group, the report - The Role of Gas Infrastructure in Australia’s Energy Transition – found accelerated electrification – in the short-term – inadvertently misses the opportunity for a faster reduction in Australia’s emissions profile. It's great to see the report recognise that renewable gases have the potential to help decrease Australia’s emissions profile while delivering energy system diversity and enabling consumer choice. Our renewable gas demonstration projects in NSW are underway to help prove this potential. Have a read here: http://ow.ly/fUHe104RivI

There are 36 “ready-to-go” high-voltage transmission projects in the United States that could interconnect about 187 GW of renewable energy capacity, which would increase U.S. wind and solar generation by 87%, Grid Strategies LLC said in a report released Wednesday. Two years ago, Grid Strategies found 22 shovel-ready projects that could provide access to 60 GW of renewable energy. Much of the increase in ready-to-go transmission projects since the older report reflects plans to connect East Coast offshore wind projects to the grid, the transmission-focused consulting firm said. In part, the report shows that developing major transmission projects is doable, according to Rob Gramlich, president of Grid Strategies. “Too often people get defeatist about how hard it is to build transmission,” he said. “It’s beneficial to show that there are real projects that are really viable in the near term that can move forward.” Developers behind the ready-to-go projects include a mix of utilities, utility affiliates and renewable energy companies such as Ameren Transmission, Avangrid, Berkshire Hathaway, Invenergy LLC Transmission, LS Power, NV Energy, Ørsted, Pattern Energy Group and XCEL Corp Energy. UK-based reserve power developer STOR Power has successfully secured planning consent for approximately 440 MWh of battery energy storage systems. STOR Power 440MWh portfolio features three 2-hour BESS projects, one of which is located in the UK’s green belt. STOR Power’s latest BESS projects have all achieved planning permission in 2023 and are prequalified into the upcoming T-4 Capacity Market auction. “The challenge of identifying and consenting sites suitable for the development of much needed energy storage and backup infrastructure is becoming increasingly complex so we are delighted to get these important projects consented this year, representing another key step in our mission to power the switch to a low carbon future,” said Jenka Kaslik, CTO of STOR Power, who led the planning application process. STOR Power said it is now reviewing ‘strategic options’ for these sites, including a potential sale or raising external finance to fund construction work. “Proud to be celebrating the addition of this 440MWh battery storage capacity to our portfolio,” noted Jon Antoniou, CEO of STOR Power. “We are now reviewing strategic options for these sites with potential financing partners or parties able to progress the projects into build efficiently.” Founded in 2015, STOR Power has built a strong footprint in the UK’s reserve power market with flexible generation assets. STOR Power has previously developed and exited 180 MW of reserve power facilities in 2018, while the company also reached financial close in 2021 on a 60 MWh BESS and four 15 MW hydrogen-ready flexible generator plants. #cleanenergy
